ing tim b e r of first g rade q u ality upon
these lands, th e title to which is now
in dispute, and th e lum ber in d u stry is
being seriously handicapped by reason
of th is contention over these title s.
I t is understood th a t th e S paulding
IiOgging company owns a g re a t deal of
th is land, and in case title is perfected
by a c t of congress, th is company will
sell a p a rt o f its holdings w est of here,
and th a t a new mill will go in a t
D allas. Inasm uch as th e use o f the
LaCreole riv e r fo r logging purposes
has been stopped by o rd er o f the
court, the logging of th is tim b e r w est
o f here, and on th e u p p er branches of
th is riv er, w ill n ecessita te th e con­
stru ctio n o f an o th e r railroad line from
th is city into th a t te rrito ry .

Salem —The figures as shown in the
sta te m e n t prepared by S ecretary Ol-
cott, in d icatin g th a t som e-of th e s ta te
in stitu tio n s are behind, as fa r as th e ir
m ain ten an ce a p p ro p riatio n s a re con­
cerned, do not indicte th a t th e in s ti­
tu tio n s w ill show a deficiency a t the
end o f th e y ear, says G overnor W est.
" W e announced e arly th a t th ere
would be no deficiencies, and th ere
will be n o n e,” said th e governor.
“ The figures for th e y ear, w hile on
the face they would in d icate th a t th e
in stitu tio n s are in som e instances fa r
behind, a re perhaps a little m islead­
ing. and do not show th e e n tire sta tu s
of th e in stitu tio n s.
" F o r instance, a t th e s ta te school
for the feeble-m inded, w here th e fig­
ures in d icate th a t th e m ain ten an ce of
1912 has been used to a c e rta in e x ­

solutely prohibited in A lbany if an o r­
