The te s ts w ere conducted follow ing
an ap p ro p riatio n o f $16,000 by the
s ta te leg islatu re, s ta rtin g la st Ju n e,
follow ing a re p o rt from th e s ta te v e t­
e rin a ria n , d ecla rin g th a t a very sm all
p a rt o f th e pork consumed in th is
s ta te w as raised locally. Follow ing a
sta te m e n t th a t the in dustry w as un­
profitable m ainly because o f heavy
losses through cholera, an a p p ro p ria­
tion w as m ade to conduct te s ts in se­
cu rin g g serum . The rep o rt o f resu lts
of th e ex p erim en ts w as as follow s:
“ C areful and p e rsiste n t a tte n tio n to
p rev en tiv e m easures, such as q u a ra n ­
tin e, d isin fectio n , proper
feeding,
e tc ., on th e p a rt o f the farm ers g en er­
ally would no doubt resu lt in m aterial
reduction in the y early losses from
hog cholera. The im portance o f ob­
serving these precautions cannot be
overestim ated.
“ H owever, as it is regarded as im ­
p racticab le to enforce a general and
com pletely effective q u aran tin e, the
bureau of anim al in dustry has endeav­
ored for y ears to find a m edicine or
serum w hich could be used for pre­
v en tin g hog cholera, o r fo r curing
hogs sick o f th a t disease.
“ I t is a w ell-known fa c t th a t hogs
w hich have recovered from hog chol­
e ra a re th e re a fte r im m une from the
disease. The ex p erim en t o f th e bu­
reau of anim al in dustry resulted in the
discovery th a t when such im m unes
are injected w ith th e blood from a
sick hog, ’th e im m une is no t made
sick, b u t aH a re su lt o f th is infection
its blood acquires the pow er to p ro tect
o th e r hogs from hog cholera.
I t is
now en tirely possible to p ro tect hogs
if they are tre a te d w ith serum from a
p ro p erly -treated im mune.
In the
te s ts practically 2,000 hogs, located on
47 se p a ra te farm s, w ere tre a te d . The
problem has finally been Bolved.”
Follow ing orders from the s ta te au ­
th o rities, th e new serum used as a re ­
su lt o f the ex p erim en ts is to be sold
by the board o f reg en ts o f th e u n iv er­
sity , as fa s t as it is made up, to fa rm ­
e rs in several p a rts o f th e s ta te . Ac­
cording to P rofessor W ickson, the
serum is to be sold a t cost, a tem p o r­
ary price h aving been se t a t 2} cents
a cubic c en tim eter.

FIVE KILLED BY COLLAPSE
OF UMPQUA VALLEY BRIDGE
R oseburg, O r.— Five men w ere a l­
m ost in stan tly killed and five others
w ere injured, fo u r o f them seriously,
when th e big wooden bridge spanning
the U m pqua riv e r in Coles valley, 18
m iles n o rth w est of R oseburg, col­
lapsed and fell into th e w ater, a dis­
tance o f about 60 feet. All the killed
and injured w ere m em bers o f the
Douglas C ounty bridge gang, and had
been a t w ork re p airin g the ill-fated
stru c tu re for
about th ree weeks.
W ith the south end of th e bridge in­
ta c t, the crew began rem oving the
false w ork to th e opposite end of the
stru c tu re to replace some defective
eyebeam s.
They had only p artly com pleted the
task when the whole span suddenly
quivered and an in sta n t la te r crashed
to th e w ater below. The e n tire crew
w as rem oving the floor planking when
th e collapse came, and none w ere able
to escape.
The in ju red w ere cared
fo r by
neighboring farm ers and doctors w ere
rushed from R oseburg and O akland in
autom obiles to the scene of the d isas­
ter, w here ev ery th in g possible was
done for the injured men.
The five
bodies of those killed w ere also recov­
ered by farm ers and tak en to Rose­
burg for interm ent.
The bridge consisted o f a single
span 332 fe e t long, and w as b u ilt in
1891, a t a cost o f $22,000.
A steel
bridge will probably be b u ilt in its
place.

the real value of hops for com m ercial
use. W hen th e old prejudices and
fa u lty m ethods of ju d g in g a re laid
aside. Pacific C oast hops will rank
d ifferently and much h ig h er in the
m a rk e ts o f th e world.
P rofessor T a rta r believes th a t one
o f th e best things th a t can be done fo r
th e hop industry in th is s ta te is to em ­
ploy stan d ard s for judging the product
upon a scientific basis.
The Oregon
hops a re very rich in lupulin and b it­
te r principles, and th is should be rec­
ognized and its value considered in
th e m a rk e t price paid.

valley since the season opened, two
w eeks ago, and the fr u it is going out

Howell pears are now being harvested.
The Howells are exceptionally fine th is
year, and are expected to b rin g good
prices.

so fa r is being held in Chicago a w a it­
ing the clearin g o f th e m ark et of
cheap fru it. The local association is
g re a tly in need of a cold storage p lan t
here, and te n ta tiv e plans a re being
m ade fo r the erectio n o f a $100,000
p la n t n e x t season.
W ith such a p la n t in Medford, local
grow ers w ill be able to hold th e ir
f r u it fo r the prices they w ant, instead
o f h aving to ship them to comm ission
houses from the trees.
