Many dairymen have given no other
thought to the sire than that he was
a necessity In bringing the cows to
their milk. Any kind of a sire would
answer this purpose, and when it
came to considering the offspring, the
sire was never taken into considera
tion. A heifer was saved from the
herd because her dam was a good
producer, and when perhaps no one
knew or even cared from what sire
she came. The poor dairy sire, then,
is directly responsible for our hav
ing so many unprofitable cows at the
present time.
“ The sire is half the herd,” Is a
saying, the truth of which is vouched
for by all progressive dairymen, ami
in the using o f a good, pure-bred
sire on grade cows, as the great ma
jority of the dairymen should do, he
is more than “ half the herd,” for hie
characteristics are firmly fixed by
continued breeding along the same
lines, while those of grade cows are
not, and his characteristics appear
much more prominent in the off
spring.
In selecting a dairy sire, the fol
lowing points should be considered:
(1) pedigree, (2) purity of breeding.
(3) type, (4) prepotency, and (5J
health.
Purity of Breeding: Under no con
sideration should anything but a
pure bred sire be used. W e cannot
discard the grade cow, for there is
but a very small per cent of the cows
that are pure-bred, and they could
not begin to supply the demand for
dairy products, but as one sire is
enough for about forty cows, and as
he alone will have as much or more
influence on the offspring as will the
entire forty cows. It can readily be
seen that It Is quite possible to meet
the demand for sires from the pure
bred herds that we have and also to
see that purity of breeding is of
much more importance in the sire
than in the dam.
Pedigree: Dairymen, as a rule, save
the heifers from their best cows,
realizing that they will make better
cows than would the heifers from the
poor cows. The same thing is true
of the dairy sire, that is, the better
his ancestry Is the better he should
be. First of all, one should consider
the merit of his sire’s mother as pro
ducer, also the daughters of his sire,
and grandsire. A ll of the females, as
far back as they can be traced, should
be considered.
The further back
continuous records can be traced the
better for the animal.
Type: By all means, select a sire
that is distinctly masculine. This is
noticeable in -th e head and back of
the animal. He should have a bold,
bright eye, and a well arched, mas
culine neck.
From the shoulders
backward he should have the same
general outline as the dairy cow. He
should carry no surplus flesh, but
should always be a strong, vigorous,
active animal.
Prepotency:
Prepotency
Is
the
term that signifies the power which
an animal possesses o f transmitting
Its characteristics to its offspring.
Unless a dairy sire is prepotent, he
is useless, no matter how fine an in
dividual he may otherwise be. The
purer the breeding the more likely he
is to be preponent, other things be
ing favorable. The full value of a
dairy sire is never known until he
has heifers at the producing age, and
for this reason a middle-aged bull is
much better than a young one that
has no descendants. A good individ
ual should never be destroyed until
he is too old for service.
Health: The health of the dairy
sire must be given careful considera
tion. Any predisposition to disease
makes him useless, for this would
more than likely be transmitted to
his offspring. He must be free from
contagious diseases, as it is possible
for the sire to scatter contagious dis
ease to all animals in the herd in a
very short time, and extreme care
is necessary in handling and caring
for him.
W e are facing a shortage o f dairy
cows in the United States and if a
man expects to have a good herd of
cows he must raise them rather than
buy them. For this reason the dairy
sire should be selected with the
greatest care, and the points which
have been discussed in preceding
paragraphs should be carefully con
sidered.
On Going to 8leep.
How do we go to sleep? How does
Mother Nature charm away our con
sciousness? First of all, ehe throws
her spell on those centres of our bod
ies that preside over the muscular sys

after another gradually to collapse.
Thereafter, various powers of mind
succumb In regular order. First, we
lose attention and Judgement.
Then
memory goes, and Imagination wan

of time and space cease to control

A WARNING TO MANY
Some Interesting Facts Regarding
Health S:atistics.
Few people realize to what extent
their health depends upon the condition
o f the kidneys.
The physician in nearly all cases ot
serious illness, makes a chemical analy
sis o f the patient’s urine. Ho knows
that unless the kidneys are doing their
work properly, the other organs cannot
be brought back to health and strength.
When the kidneys are neglected or
abused in any way, serious results are
9ure to follow.
According to health
statistics, B rig h t’s disease which is
really an advanced form of kidney
trouble, caused nearly ten thousand
deaths in 11)09, in the state o f New
Y ork alone. Therefore, it behooves us
to pay more- attention to the health of
these most important organs.
An ideal herbal compound that has
had remarkable success as a kidney
remedy is Dr. K ilm e r’s Swamp Root, the

Success Brings Many New Recruits to
Rebel Cause— United States
Troop Strictly Neutral.
Calexico, Feb. 13.— The Mexican
guardhouse, located Just across the
International line at Mexicali, was
burned to the ground by the Insur
rectos at 3 o’clock this morniug.
This was done in fulfillment of a
warning given the Federal officials
by the insurrecto leaders when they
evacuated Mexloall 12 days ago, that
if any attempt was made to resume
the collection ot customs the build
ing would he destroyed upon the re
turn of the insurrectos.
The alarm of fire was given by sen
tries in the camp of the United States
troops less than a block away from
the burning buildings, but none of
the soldiers crossed over, strict or
ders having been issued to remain on
United States territory.
No Federal soldiers have appeared
and the rumor that Mexican troops
had appeared across the desert be
tween Picachos Pass and New River
proved groundless. In anticipation ot
the troops appearing, Berthold called
In all the sentries and massed them
in the bull fight arena.
Recruits to the lusurgent force are
constantly being received. The state
ment was made today that the Insur
gents have 50 men in the Cocopas
Mountains, where they cau keep close
watch of Picachos Pass, through
which the Federáis must come from
Ensenada to Mexicali.
llerthold had secured the services
ot nearly 100 Cocopa Indians to act
as scouts and guides through the
mountain district, and it Is believed
the Insurgent scouts are keeping Leyva
well posted on the movements of the
Federal soldiers.
The Signal Service Corps of the
United States Army has sent a de
tachment of eight men to Yuma and
three to. Calexico to establish wire

tions will be established at points
of about 30 miles apart from Yuma
to San Diego. In this manner the
United States Government will be
able to keep In touch with the situa
