F o r the guidance of persons desiring
orchard is 25 per cent,*’ said the speak
ance, form er agronomist of the Wash
ington e xperim ent stations, says:
“ In pre paring to seed alfa lfa , it is
usually best to plow iu the fall, le a v
ing the furrows rough over wiuter, iu
order to secure the benefits of w e a t h
ering, a n d to permit the se ttling of the
furrows by the action of the fall and
w inter rains. This also encourages the
early germination of weed seeds, so
that the soil may be p artially cleaned
of foul st u f f in the spring preparation
of the soil for seeding.
“ As soon as the soil is f it to work
in the spring, the surface should be
given a light working in order to form
a mulch to conserve the moisture and
to smooth the surface of the furrows
to encourage the germination of weed
seeds t h a t lie near the surface. The
amount of c ultivation must be d e te r
mined by the condition of the soil, but
should be sufficient to work up a good
mulch of loose earth. Deep cultivation
is not desirable. l Tp to the f ir s t day
of May the land should be given s u f
ficient cultivation to
preserve
the
mulch, and to prevent weeds from se
curing too much of a sta rt. About the
first of May the final preparation for
seeding should be given.
“ I f the surface has been well worked
prior to the first of May little more
than a single harrow in g may be needed,
but the aim should be to secure a well
pulverized seed bed of two or three
inches depth with the bottom of the
furrow l e f t firm. I n ease of spring
plowing, the firm ing of the furrow may
be brought about b y the use of a roller,
planker or^othe r compacting tool.
“ Soils west of the Cascade moun
tains seem to require inoculation for
successful alf a lfa production. This is
best accomplished by harrow ing in at
the final preparation for seeding, a
light sprinkling of soil take n from some
old a lfa lfa field where the crop has
grown successfully. Soils secured from
persons in this region who have suc
ceeded with alf a lfa would do a d m ir a
bly for this purpose.
“ Tn securing seed, be very careful
to purchase seed possessing high v i ta l
ity a nd free from the seeds of noxious
weeds. I t is more im p o rta n t to be sure
of these two points th a n to seed a l
falfa of a c ertain strain . Persons who
are not able to determine the p u rity
of samples furnished them should send
samples to the b o tanist of their sta te
experiment station, who will examine
free of charge, and report flic results.
“ I f good seed is secured, ten pounds
per acre seeded broadcast on very th o r
oughly prepared soil and well ha rrowed
in will be ample. The W ashin gton e x
periment station lias secured b e tt e r suc
cess by se eding w ith a grain drill, slip
ping the spouts of the drill off the
grain box and a tt a c h i n g them to the
grass seed box, so th at the seed will
be conducted into the shoes of the drill,
ns i n 't h e case of wheat and oats. S e t
ting the shoes of the drill to run shal
low will result in the seed being placed
in moist dirt where the greatest num
ber will germinate, and it will not be
put in too deep, if t l i a soil has been
prepared as previously indicated.
“ D uring the first season the alf a lfa
should not be pastured before it has
made a growth of a t least a foot, as
■he plan t needs an o pportunity to de
velop its root system. Tf weeds are apt
