—Greater progress has been
made by the business interests
of Oregon between March 29 and
June 30 than in any two-months
period in the history of the state
since the establishment of the
state hank examiner’s office.
This is disclosed in the report of
the Bank Examiner, just made,
covering that period.
Deposits in the banks of the
state at close of business June
30 totaled $115,196,986. a gain
since March 29 o f $1,192,705.
Of these deposits $11,925,734
were savings deposits, which in
creased during the same period
$842,985.
Total resources of
Oregon b a n k s , $142,418,734.
Eight new banks were estab
lished in the state during the
period covered by the report.

promised unless unexpected dif
ficulties arise.
Grading from
the Columbia River south will be
completed, it is believed, by Sep
tember 1. Laying of rails will
then be begun and ballasting
will he done as fast as each mile
of track is laid. Thus it will he
but a short time between the
laying of She last rail and the
opening of the road for business.
Grading south of Madras toward
Bend is also being rushed and
the building of the.road for that
distance will follow completion
of the line to Madras.

to camp at American Lake this

usual joint field maneuvers with
the regular army. August 8 is

and the men will remain in camp

Coos Bay is going to improve
its iiarbor and the channel from
the ocean into the bay.
Public
docks and warehouses are to be
built as well. For this purpose
it is the intention to expend
$300,000. It is proposed to issue
20-year bonds bearing 5 per cent
interest. Coos Bay people ap
prove this project g»ne«ii]ly but
the Commission of the Port has
decided to leave the matter to a
vote at the Fall election.

Secretary Wilson, of the De
partment o f Agriculture, has
been in .Oregon during thé past
week seeking information in re
gard to the settlement of lands
included in the forest reserves of
the state. He plan3 to have the
reserve re-mapiped.arcd the boun
daries established in an accurate
way. It is said,much land is in
cluded in the reserves that should
not be, and when the new maps
are completed 5,000,000 or 6,000,
000 acres now in reserves in the
state will be opened up for set
tlement.
Secretary Ballinger, of the De
partment of the Interior, is busy
on a trip of inspection o f the
reclamation projects of the state
and is becoming familiar with
the workings of the service in
Oregon.

thousands of dollars. The Lit
erary Digest contains a lengthy
article in regard to it, and quotes
from various newspapers that
are giving the matter publicity.
It says, quoting the Brooklyn
Eagle:
“ The dishonesty in the sale of
goods has been very general,
but it has sprung from lack of
close supervision rather than
from wide-spread dishonesty of
purpose.
There are dishonest
men irr every line o f business.
When such mem are allowed to
sell goods under weight or meas
ure, honest men who compete
with them must either lose busi
ness or resort to the same sort
o f cheating.
The temptation
has led a good many naturally
honest but weak men to adopt
the swindling practises, until
they have become ‘trade cus
toms.’ ”

the consumer has to pay for it at

According to Mayor
Gaynor’s experts, the people of
New York pay $40,000 a year for
skewers alone, buying them as
lamb chops or tenderloin at from
25 to 50 cents a “pound. They
cost the butchers about $500 a
year.”
