CHAPTER VIII.
Every minute the sound came near
er, till at last only a thin coating sep
arated them from their assailants.
Presently this gave way with a
loud crack, and a huge dark mass
rolled over Into the room.
Altamont had already swung his
hatchet to strike, when he was arrest
ed by a well-known voice, exclaiming:
"For heaven's sake, stop!”
"The doctor! the doctor!”
cried
Johnson.
And the doctor It actually was who
had tumbled In among them In such
undignified fashion.
"How do ye do, good friends?” be
said, picking himself up.
His companions stood stupefied for
a moment, but Joy soon loosened their
tongues, and each rushed eagerly for
ward to welcome his old comrade. Hat
teras was fairly overcome with em o
tion. and hugged him like a child.
"But how did you know we had
been attacked by a troop of bears?"
asked Altamont. when they got their
breath. "What we were most afraid
of was that you would come back,
never dreaming of danger."
"Oh, I saw It all. Your repeated
shots gave me the alarm. When you
commenced firing I was beside the
wreck of the Porpoise, but I climbed
up a hummock, and discovered five
bears close on your heels. I crept cau
tiously nearer, sometimes going on
all fours, sometimes slipping between
great blocks of Ice, till I came at
last quite close to our fort, and then
I found the bears working away like
beavers.”
"But what danger you were In, Mr.

Doings of the World at Large
Told in Brief.
COUNCILMEN AT * 5 0 EACH.
Regular Price for Pittsburg Grafters
in Small Deals.
Pittsburg, March 23. — Nine more
former members of the councils, be
fore the district attorney today, con
fessed their guilt in accepting money
for their votes while members of the
municipal bodies and before Judge R.
S. Fraser received the immunity bath
of a suspended sentence.
When the grand jury adjourned for
the day just before 5 o’clock, it had
returned no indictments, although it
had listened for hours to developments
in the bribery scandal even more sen
sational than those brought out yester
day. Men admitted selling their honor
for from $50 up.
John F. Klein was before the grand
jury the greater part of the day and
continued his narrative of councilmanic
graft. Klein recounted some of his
experiences in handing out the money
to the councilmen.
“ There was one fellow,” he said,
“ who was a daisy—a regular Shylock

street business I handed him $81. He

INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT AND
PROGRESS OF OUR HOME STATE
SPEND $ 3 5 ,0 0 0 ON CANALS.
4 0 MILES DRAINAGE CANALS.
Klamath County Project Will Reclaim
19,000 A cres on W ood River.
Klamath Falls — Work has been
resumed on the canal along Wood riv
er, for the reclamation of 19,000 acres
of the weed land.
The land has a
frontage of seven miles on the river.
It will be necessary to cut about 40
miles of canals to properly drain and
reclaim the tract. About seven miles
were made last year, and it is expected
to complete about ten miles this year.
This will form a dyke along the river
and around the north end of the land
that will keep the water from over
flowing the land, and then cross canals
are to be run through the property for
drainage purposes.
The Wood river valley is acknowl
edged one o f the best dairy sections in
Oregon, and with this big tract drained
and put into timothy and red top and
settled with dairy farmers, it will
easily produce a greater revenue than
that derived from all other resources
in the county at the present time.
The canal is being cut in a fairly
straight line and cuts off all the points
and curves of the river, and thus leaves
a strip of land o f varying width along
the west side of the river.
As this
land is somewhat higher and perfectly
dry, there are many choice tracts of ah
acre or more along the seven miles of
water front, suitable for building pur
poses. This strip is to be platted and
sold for summer homes.
It is stated
that there is enough o f this land to ac
commodate about 150 cottages.
Irrigation
Company Plans to Finish
$ 1 0 ,0 0 0 Project.
Bend — The Arnold Irrigation com
pany is spending $35,000 on improve
ments to the distributive water Bys
tem. The largest undertaking o f the
plans will be the building of a new
flume. The flume will be 12 feet wide
and three feet deep, and a mile and a
quarter long. The body of it will be
o f two-inch lumber, and -the support
ing timbers and foundation will be con
structed in most substantial manner.
The intake will be enlarged and per
manent gates installed.
Approxi
mately three miles of old canal will be
widened. It is planned to build from
six to eight miles of new canal on the
east lateral, which runs eastward into
the Arnold section; and also some three
or four miles of new work on the north
lateral, which will water land lying
directly east of and southeast of town.
The Arnold system will water ap
proximately 10,000 acres lying east
and southeast of town. It is a mutual
company, the stock of whiefi it owned
by farmers and Bend business men. A
large portion of the land lying under
this system was originally taken up as
homesteads and desert land entries,
and the holdings ranged from 160 to
500 acres to each man.
Lately these
larger tracts have been divided and are
being sold to newcomers, who plan to
devleop their holdings extensively as
soon as the system is finished and
water delivered to their lands.
