Oregon’ s chief city is going
ahead as never before in its his
tory. Portland is growing because
the state at large is prosperous
and is constantly increasing its
wealth. Plans to beautify the
city by following a comprehen
sive scheme of city building are
are now receiving a great deal
uf 'attention. Mayor Simon an
nounces that during the coming
year 90 miles of hard pavement
will be put down, making the
streets o f the metropolis equal,
if hot superior, to any other city
in the West. At present Portland
ha£ a1 total o f 60 miles o f hard
surface pavements.

An effort is being made to
have the laws relating to the
taxation o f seagoing vessels
changed so as to encourage them
to register from Oregon ports in
stead o f California.
The rate
there is half what we try to col
lect in Oregon. Some people
would ¡say that if a high tax
drives them out o f the state we
could be just as well off if we did
not tax vessels at all. What
barm does it do to have a few
vessels in our ports with the

the stern?
