CHAFF FROM THE STIAW STACK
No man can have a good head and
a bad stomach.
When a lady Is in full dress she is
dressed the least.
Putting nickles in the slot is like
pouring water In a rat hole.
The modern girl can curl hair better
than she can peal potatoes.
The best evening ties are those that
keep a man at home after dark.
It Is a stiff neck that knows no turn
ing, when a pretty woman passes.
A wise husband never praises his
wife's bonnet, until , he has seen the
hi U for it.
An observing man says, short skirts
do not necceasarlly make the ladles
look shorter, but they always make
ths men look longer.
"A dispatch from Berlin says that
every calf in Germany will be vacinat
ed." In this country the girls kick
when they get it on one.
When people see your name in the
paper continually, they get to think
they know you, and it Is but a short
step from his acquaintance to patron
age for that reason advertise.
An Eastern exchange says: The
man who wrestles with the cow and
learns the calves to suck, who casts
the corn before the swine is now In
greatest luck, for butter's on the up
ward grade, veal's higher than a kite;
pork is climbing up the scale, and beef
is out of sight, the eggs he gathers ev
ery day from his Poland chicken coop
are almost worth their weight in gold,
and we are in the soup. His corn
brings a fancy price, it's rising every
day, and he makes all kinds of money
from half a ton of hay. The farmer is
in the saddle, and when he comes to
town the rest of us by right should "go
way back and sit down."
CLARK'S CANYON
The young people had a pop-corn
social at the home of Wm. Padberg.
A ring, a button, a bean and a piece
of money were hidden in the cake.
Alex Hunt received the ring, which
gives him the privelege to marry first.
Henry Harmer has returned from
the hospital, where had a surgical op
eration performed.
The X'mas tree was enjoyed by
young and old. The old house was
well filled with people.
Miss Agnes Hammer spent her va
cation at Wm. Padberg's home.

Weston to spend X'mas and New
Years.
A KNOCK AT THE DOOR.
Strang Incident In the Childhood of
Alexandre Duma.
Alexandre Dumas was ' a little
more than four years old when he
lost his father, yet he relates a
strange incident connected with the
ivent to which he attached so much
importance as to have it accompa
nied by a plan of the house in which
it occurred. This was the abode of
a locksmith, whither young Dumas
had been removed the day before
his father'6 demise.
"I remained," he eays, "till a late
hour in the smithy. The forge gave
out at night effects of light and
shade fantastic reflections which
greatly pleased me. About 8 o'clock
my cousin Marianne camo to fetch
me and put me to bed in a little
impromptu couch near a larger one',
nnd 1 went to sleep with that good
sleep that heaven vouchsafes to
children like the dews of spring.
"At midnight I woke up ot,

and I by a loud knock at the door.
A night lamp was burning in the
room, and by the ight of that lamp
I saw my cousin rise up in bed, much
alarmed, but not saying a word.
"Xo one could knock at the door
without getting through an outer
one.
"But I, who even at the prsent
day shudder in writing these lines
I felt no fear. I got out of bed and
went toward the door.
"'Where are you going, Alex
andre ?' my cousin cried out. 'Where
are you going ?'
" 'You see where I am going I
answered quietly. 1 am going to
open the door for papa, who has
come to bid us goodby.
"The poor girl jumped out of bed
terrified, caught, me just as I was
opening the door and brought me
bfiok by forfta to 'my bed.' I strug
gled in her arms, shouting with all
my strength : 'Goodby, papa I Good
by, papa!'' ' '
"Something; like n dying breath
passed over my face and calmed me.
"Nevertheless I . went to sleep
again with tears in my eyes, sobbing
vehemently.
"The next morning we were
awake at break of day.
"My father had died at the very
moment I had heard that loud knock
at the door!
"Then I heard these words, with
out being able to understand thor
oughly what they meant: 'My poor
child, your papa, who loved you 60
dearly, is dead!' "
