A KANSAS FREAK
We have heard and read of all kinds
of liars, but we beleive that th author
of the following taken from an Arkan
sas paper, Is entitled to the medal;
Great Bend, Kansas, Sept. 25
The case of Washington Davis, an
aged negro who lives on a truck farm
a few miles south of Great Bend, in a
settlement known as "Little Africa, Is
attracting much attention. The old
darky's skin is changing to the color
of a watermelon, and his figure is
rounding Into the shape of a perfectly
formed melon. , The sidts of the
negro's body and head have turned
green, while his back and face and the
front part of his body have changed to
a brilliant red. Wherever the red
shows dozens of black spots, shaped
like melon seeds, can be easily distin
guished, and on top of his head, which
is quite bald, there is a growth about
three inches in length which resembles
the stem of a melon. The legs and
arms are rapidly shriveling to the size
: of a vine, and the ears, hands and feet
have the exact appearance of the leaf
of a watermelon vine.
Davis says that the peculiar trans
formation was caused by fright. He
confesses that on the night of Septem
ber! it, he was feasting in a neigh
bor's melon patch, when the latter,
who heard a noise In the garden, fired
the contents of both barrels of a shot
gun in the direction from which the
noise came. Davis says buck-shot
whizzed all around him, and he was so
frightened that he reached his cabin
with great difficulty. He was com
pelted to remain In bed for several
days.
Lack of Spaco.
There are some trials which be
set one at an early age. Bobby, vis
iting his grandmother, sulTcred one
of them.
"Did you have a good time?"
asked Hobby's mother. The small
son hesitated before be Answered. .
"Not so very," he said sadly.
"You see, grandmother kept telling
me to eat all the dinner I wanted,
and I couldn't!"
