The Republican press of Western
Oregon are almost unanimous in favor
of and using their efforts to secure the
nomination of Hon. John H. Aitkin, of
Huntington, for State Treasurer, as
the press voices the sentiment of the
people, the Indications are that he is
the favorite In that section in this
city he has made a remarkable cam
paign, his friends and admirers are
working early and late for him, he is
sure to receive a big vote here.
It Is natural to suppose that Eastern
Oregon Republicans will give him a
very large majority, they should rally
to his support, in doing so they can se
cure for him the nomination.
He has made the cleanest canvass
among all his competitors, without per
sonalities or mud throwing has not
combined with politicians or bankers
but is conducting a clean cut honorable
campaign one the people should aud
will endorse.
EARTHQUAKE SHOCK
SAN FRANCISCO BADLY SHAKEN. FIRE BREAKS OUT
WATER MAINS BROKEN. MANY LIVES LOST
A severe earthquake shock was
felt in San Francisco yesterday. The
water mains were broken and fire broke
out in several places. Reports last
night state that 950 people are known
to be dead and the fire was still rag
ing. Among the buildings wrecked
an destroyed are the Cliff House, Ex
aminer and Chrontde offices, Stanford
University. As we go to press reports
state that the fire Is gaining headway.
The estimated loss is 3000 lives.

A dance was given at G. Mead's
on Tuesday evening in honor of the
16th birthday of their daughter, Miss
Etta. Everyone was well pleased
with the entertainment and refresh
ments, all wishing her many more of
these pleasant occasions.
