THURSDAY MARCH 22, 1906.
Lexington and' The Wheatfield have
received considerable free advertising
from the county press the past few
months. The Proclaimer man re
lieved himself of the following In the
last issue:
Twinkle, twinkle, little star;
How 1 wonder what you are.
Up above the paper staff,
Like a Wheatfield full of chaff.
To which we add:
When the Proclaimer's sun has set,
And Carter's eyes with tears are wet;
Still the Wheatfild's shining light,
Will burn brilliant, day and night.
The best way to ascertain a man's
real worth and standing js to go to his
home neighborhood, where his daily
walk and conversation are an open
book. . Such a test will disclose only
good for John H. Aitkin's cause, for
his friends and neighbors are jumping
at the chance of saying good things
about him as a citizen and also re
garding his standing as a successful
business man. There can be no
question but what he is a man well
worthy of the confidence and respect
of the people of Oregon, and he is go
ing to make a mighty fine official, one
who would reflect much credit upon
this great commonwealth. Umpqua

Word was received in Lexington
last Friday, that Fay, the youngest
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Nich
ols, of Dayton, Wash., was dead. W.
F. Barnett, Mesdames W. E. Leach,
J. M. White and Grandma Thompson
went there Saturday to attend the
funeral. Little Fay was 4 years and
29 days old. Fay was an exceedingly
bright child for her age. A few days
before death she was taken with pneu
monia and none realized that death
was so near. Mr. and Mrs. Nichols
are well known here and all express
words of sorrow and sympathy for the
bereved family
Dear Fay thou has left us;
Here thy loss we deeply feel;
But 'tis God who has bereft us,
He can all our sorrow heal.
Fay, thou wast mild and lovely,
Gentle as the summer breeze,
Pleasant as the air of evening
When it floats among the trees.
Resting in thy silent slumber,
Resting in the grave so low,
Thou no more will join our number,
Thou no more our songs shall know.
Yet again we hope to meet the
When the day of life is fled,
And in heaven with joy to greet thee,
Where no farewell tear is shed.
