Oregon, has announced himself as a
candidate for state treasurer before the
republican primaries. Location and
qualification gives to General Aitkin a
strong lead for the nomination. It
seems conceded that this nomination
should go to Eastern Oregon. Mr.
Aitkin has all the'peculiar qualifica
tions for the office Lebanon Criterion.

candidate for the Republican nomina
tion of Sheriff of Morrow county. Mr.
Fullers reputation Is of the "square
deal" kindr and Morrow county can
not do better than elect such men to
office, Mr. Fuller's many friends In
Sherman cqunty will be pleased to
hear of his success; In receiving the
nomination, which is equivalent to an

As announced In last weeks issue of
The Wheatfield the funeral of H. H.
Wheeler ! occurred 'last Thursday.
Hemp H. Wheeler was born at Lamp-
ton, Grafton county, N. H., January
5th 1836 and crossed the plains with
teams in 1863 locating In the Umpqua
Valley. Since which time he has
iHftnt of Oreeon. He lo
cated at Lexington in 1879, where he
resided until the call for him to make
the journey to the other shore. On
May 31, 1874 he was married to Mary
J. Kennedy, at Colfax, Wash., two
sons, ..who survive him, were born to
them.
E. M. Larkin and Miss Altha Leach
were married this morning at 9 a. m.,
at the home of the brides brother, W.
E. Leach, Rev.' T P Graham officiat
ing. The bride Is an estimaDie young
lady who is known by almost everyone
In the county, having been born and
reared in this vicinity. She conduct
ed a Millinery business in Heppner for
some time where she was liked by all
who knew her. . She Is a sister ot

Ralph Leach, all of whom are well
known here, and a sister of Mrs
Standish; ot Brownsville; The groom
is traveling salesman for the Best
Harvester Co., and resides in Califor

Walla Walla. The Wheatfield joins
in wishing them happiness and success.
About 4 o'clock last Tuesday after
noon fire was discovered In the resi
dence property occupied by Mr. and
Mrs. Orrvllle Brown. The alarm was
given and the Volunteer fire company
responded promptly. The fire started
In the sitting room and was caused by
an overheated stove. Mrs. Brown was
in the kitchen and hearing an unusual
roaring in the sitting room went In to
see what caused It, on opening the
door she discovered the entire room In
flames. Her little daughter was' In
the room when the fire started and
becoming frightened went into the bed
room and crawled under the bed In
stead of alarming her mother. The
property belonged to the Gentry estate
and the damage amounting to about
$200 is fully covered by Insurance.
Mr. Brown carried no Insurance on his
household goods and his loss vlll
amount to about $100. ' i ' '

The Dalles, Oregon, February 20, 1906.
A sufficient contest affidavit having been
filed In this office by James McCabe, con
testant, against homestead entry No. 12 106,
made February 11, 1903, for SE NE1,
E'A SWX. Section 34, Township 2, N
Range 25, E. W. M. by Patrick McCabe,
Contestee, In which It li alleged that said
entryman has wholly abandoned said land
and has failed to live upon and cultivate said
land as required by law: that the only Im
provements he has made upon said land is
a shack of a cabin which is not habitable at
any time of the year; that said alleged ab
sence has existed for more than six months
last past; that said alleged absence was not
due to his employment In the army, navy or
marine corps of the United States In time
of war. Said parties are hereby notified to
appear, respond and offer evidence touch
ing ald allegation at 10 o'clock a. m. on
April 12, 1906, before Vawter Crawford,
County clerk at his office In Heppner, Ore
gon, and that final hearing will be held at
10 o'clock a. m. on April 19, 1906 before
the Register and Receiver at the United
States Land Office in The Dalles Oregon.'
The said contestant having, In a proper
affidavit, filed February 20, 1906, set
forth facts which show that after due deli
gence personal service of this notice can
not be made, it is hereby ordered and
directed that such notice be given by due
and proper publication.
