THE CASK OF MYRTLK TIPTON.
A three-cornered problem In sociol
ogy, In criminology and In environment
is presented in the case of Myrtle Tip
ton, the girl horsethief, who Is under
sentence of two years' confinement In
the state's prison at Walla Walla.
Reckless, care free, apparently unable
to realize the gravity of her position,
the wild life that preceded her arrest,
trial conviction and incarceration had,
and still seems to have, a charm for
her that does not promise well for her
, future. Her childhood was spent in
the saddle and at the plow, and the free
and open life, utterly destitute of re
sponsibility, has attractions for her that
it is hoped two years in prison will
-dissipate.-
An attempt will be made to secure
her release on parole, her mother
standing sponsor for her good behavior.
The wisdom of such a course may be
doubted. Repentance must precede
' reform, and there are as yet no indi
cations that the girl repents the steps
that led up to her present abode. It is
easy to conceive that much greater ill
may befall a daring, unrestrained, irre
sponsible young woman who masque
rades in man's attire and seeks the
vocations of men than has yet befallen
Myrtle Tipton. Prison, discipline will
probably be much more to her advan
tage than freedom on parole for the
nexltwo years better for herself and
and better for the heartbroken 1 mother
who pleads for her release. Oregon

This section was visited by one of
the most severe storms of the season
the past week. On Saturday a light
snow fell which soon melted and by
night a strong North wind was blowing
which continued until Monday. Con
siderable snow fell during the wind and
on Monday about 6 inches of snow
covered the wheatfields which protects
the growing crops from the , cold
weather. Small fruit has been injured
slightly, grain has not been Injured but
farmers say the snow has been a bene
fit to their crops. ,
