THURSDAY MARCH I, 1906.
FOR SHERIFF.
The announcement of A. K. Fuller,
as a candidate for nomination for
Sheriff' on the Republican ticket
appears in this Issue of The Wheat
field. This Is the first time that the
people of Lexington have asked for
anything at the hands of the voters of
the county, and they feel that In pre
senting the name of A. K. Fuller for
sheriff that they have placed a winner
in the field and a man of sterling
quality. One who, if elected, will
faithfully discharge the duties of the
office and use every means within his
power to see that the laws of the state
and county are rigidly enforced. This
honor comes to Mr. Fuller unasked as
representatives from all parts of the
county have conferred with him the
past two weeks in order to induce him
to allow the use of his name and to
get him to consent to make the race.
The Weeatfield has no hesitancy in
askingsupport for Mr. Fuller, who is
known by almost everyone in the
county.
THE BACKWARD TRAIL
Ezra Meeker, an eminent pioneer of
the Pacific northwest, who for half a
century or more has lived in the
vicinity of Puyallup, Washington, is
making what to others besides himself
will be an interesting trip. With team
and wagon, perhaps an oxteam and a
pairie schooner, he is taking the back
trek over the ok trail from hie horn
cross the mountains and plains and
fttr aed vs&it to Missouri, tfia
starting point erf tU migrant trains of
SO or 60 years ago. - H will (tad a
vary different country most of tha ay
from mat vhlch be traversed then, yet
soma of It vill not hava greatly altered.
Ha will lecture and exhibit scenes on
tha route and so perhaps turn tha trip
to a little profit, but tha novelty of It
is no doubt the main Inducement.
Old men of means and vigor hava
different vays of enjoying their declln
Ing years. Some continue at work,
being better contented thus, others
take thalr ease In a period of leisure,
but this sturdy old pioneer believes he
can best enjoy himself for a few months
In hitting the trail back to old Missouri
and many people not only of his own
state, but of Oregon, will wish him a
pleasant journey and a safe return.
The Immense tide of travel which
flowed In Portland and the Pacific
Northwest last Summer and Fall was
largely made up of people who came
west to see the country, the Exposition
being in a sense a side issue. The
extraordinarily low rate made was a
powerful factor in bringing these
crowds, and our mighty forests and
rivers, farms and fields, were of more
interest to them than was the Exposi
tion. Nearly all of those in attendance
returned with a good impression of the
country, and their'effective missionary
work Is now reflected in very heavy
tourist travel headed this way. We
still (have, with the exception of the
Exposition, all of the attractions that
we had last summer, and the railroads
have made the acme rate that was in
effect during the Fair. For these
reasons the year 1906 promises to
break all records in increasing the
population of the state.
The legislature authorized the ex
pendisure of $ 1 000 for advertising pur
poses. Portland parties are trying to
secure this amount from .the several
county courts for the purpose of issuing
a book on Portland and Oregon; It
seems to us that it would be much
better to distribute this amount among
the several county papers and have
them send copies of their papers to
Eastern people, which would do more
good and reach more people than a
book on the entire state, which would j
only devote a small space to each
county and the majority of the space
to Portland.
