Entered as second-class matter October
6, 1905, at the post office at Lexington, Or
egon, under the Act cf Congress of March
3, 1879.
THURSDAY FEBRUARY 22, 1906.
The following letter, together with
some clippings from The Wheatfield
regarding what ought to be done with
knockers, was received by us last Mon
day. "Mr. Ed Did you come here to
knock or to build up a home. Take
my advice and cut this all out, and
don't be a member of the knpckers
union.
Yours Truly,
4 Every Nation, but Carrie."
It is strictly against the rules of
this office to publish unsigned commu
nications, but an exception has been
made in this case as we do not care to
gain the ill will and everlasting
enmity of the President of the local
knockers union by refusing to publish
his communications. We understand
that all nations, except Japs, are taken
as members by the local union.
Several attempts have been made to
secure our name to one of their appli
cations for membership but as we
have firmly refused them, this means
is taken to force us to stop shouting
for Lexington, the best town in Morrow
county. There are other good towns
in the county, but none quite as good
or progressive as Lexington.
A writer in the Review of Reviews
sums up the qualities of the country
newspapers as follows: "Each copy is
read not only by the people usually
credited to the ordinary paper, but
twice or thrice that number. In many
Instances subscribers pass their papers
on and on to the Inmates of less fortu
nate homes. These publications are
pre-eminently the home papers of
newspaperdom. They are not super
ficially scanned while men travel to
business, then left to brakemen to
gather up They go directly into the
homes, and the reading of them Is a
duty as well as a pleasure. Hence
their peculiar values as moulders of
public opinion and advertising
mediums."
The Oregonian says: The famine
that threatens three millions of the
subjects of Japan is in gastly proof of
the need of expansion which made the
resistance of Japan to Russian en
croachment in Asia necessary Japan
has more people than can be maintain
ed upon her Islands. Her population
increases with great rapidity. Not
only must those of the present be fed,
but the future outlook must be studied
and disaster from starvation be fore
stalled. Hence the contention for a
foothold in Manchuria; hence the
desperate effort to break the hold of
Russia .in that province. It will be
necessary to help the famine-stricken
people in Northern Japan this time;
hereafter they may be depended upon
to help themselves like the bees by
swarming.
The Democratic voters of Umatilla
county held a large and enthusiastic
mass meeting in Pendleton Feb. 17th.
The committee submitted the following
among other important resolutions.
"We favor the adoption of the woman
suffrage amendment to the Constitu
tion."
