Entered as second-class matter October

egon, under the Act cf Congress of March
3, 1879.
THURSDAY -JANUARY 25, 1906.
There is great need of a revision of
the laws of Oregon relating to publi
cation of legal notices. Oregon is 50
years behind the times. 'The idea of
posting election notices, for instance,
woen there are newspapers in the state
do do such work, is a case in point.
Fifty years ago, when there were no
newsphpers, or very few, in Oregon,
the methods of today might have been
excusable; today there Is absolutely no
excuse for scuh methods. There are
countless other notices of a public
character that the laws of the state
should require the publication of. If
Oregon Is ever .to emerge from 'the
frontier It is high time a beginning
were made. The posting costs absolu
tely more than the publishing. Moro
Observer. While this question Is up
why not establish a "legal rate" simi
lar to what Is used in other states.
Troutdale should claim everything
shipped over the 0. R. &. N. from the
East, as well as all the grain from
Eastern Oregon. It passes through
there. This would be in line with the
claims of the lone Proclaimer, which
claims everything on this branch that
passes through' as lone shipments.
The Proclaimer man had another
fit last week. We expect to hear, in
a short time, of the Proclaimer looking
for a location in a good town Lexing
ton. We all know that Lexington is
the better town and that lone got it
"where Nellie wore the beads."
EQUAL SUFFRAGE.
I am glad the women of Oregon have
decided not to longer waive their right
of Suffrage and allow it to remain
dormant.
Their present promising campaign
had reached the stage where it Is
conceded with practical unanimity that
such an intrinsic right exists.
Such opposition as is encountered
is founded upon other objections.
Womans strongest appeal for the
exercise of the ballot may be based
upon the question of her duty to enter
politics and make her influence felt in
the advancement of the necessary
reforms in which our best citizenship

It should be remembered now that
after the victory has been won, the
results of the first election in which
women will participate, will raise our
political standards, just in proportion to
the loftiness of the ideals maintained
throughout this campaign.
The largest contributing factor to
present unsatisfactory political con
ditions is that so many men have a
false and unpatriotic conception that
they are too good to participate In
politics, and whilst their selfish neglect
of public responsibility, places them in
a humiliating position, the woman who
fails to appreciate it as it is her duty
to take a hand is liable to precisely
the same criticism.
