Carol Ann (Fischer) Lafferty
May 5, 1947 - August 18, 2022
As of August 18, 2022, Carol
Ann (Fischer) Lafferty will no
longer be here to make us laugh
with her biting wit, or lift us up
with a helping hand or comforting
words. Carol has removed herself
from us, joining her mom (Phyllis
Fischer) and dad (John Fischer) at
the heavenly coffee pot where they
await the rest of us to join them.
Carol was born in Aberdeen,
South Dakota, the first of 14 children. The family
relocated to Ontario, Oregon, where Carol was joined
over the years by the rest of her siblings. Carol graduated
high school from St. Francis Academy in Baker City
and attended Treasure Valley Community College in
Ontario, where she studied nursing.
Soon after the birth of her youngest sibling, Carol
decided enough was enough and moved to the Portland,
Oregon area, where she began her career as a nurse. It
was there that Carol met and married Mike Lafferty.
They expanded their family with two children, Meagan
and Sarah. The family moved to Central Oregon and
eventually to Umatilla, Oregon, where Carol continued
her nursing career.
Carol remained a caregiver even after retirement.
Her daughter, Sarah, says Carol was the most spirited,
vibrant and accepting mother. These qualities, along
with Carol’s unconditional love, made Sarah the person
she is today.
Left behind without Carol are her husband, Mike
Lafferty (Umatilla); daughters, Meagan and Sarah;
grandchildren, Jaimen Garza, Breanna Blackheart, Lynn
Lowney, Yevonne Gall, AJ Mealey, Sophie Mealey; and
five great-grandchildren.
Carol’s siblings remain behind to tell stories and
reminisce about the oldest who could kick butt with
the best of them but who was always first to give a
hug or lend an ear. In descending order so there are no
arguments, those siblings are Donna (Bruce) Needs,
David (Martha) Fischer, Fr. Rick Fischer, Kathy (Gary)
Langley, Jane (Bill) Burris, Linda (Bruce) Lemos, Bill
Fischer, Dianna (Chris) White, Sandy Fischer, Roger
(Karla) Fischer, Mike (Deb) Fischer, Kris (Monte)
Hurd and Anne (Larry) Haney. Innumerable nieces,
nephews, cousins and friends will also continue to keep
a part of Carol here with their memories.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
Messages for the family may be left on the website of
Westside Funeral Home Beaverton, Oregon, via www.

Dora ‘Deette’ St. John
Russell Dewayne St. John
July 26, 1931 - February 26, 2022
September 5, 1925 - May 5, 2020
Dora “Deette” St John, 90, of
Hermiston, Oregon, died on Feb. 26, 2022,
surrounded by her loved ones.
Deette was born July 26, 1931, in
Magdelina, New Mexico, to Sam and
Hazel Mickey. She was
the firstborn of 11 children,
which
included
three
brothers, Walter, Dan and
Charley; and seven sisters,
Jewell, Fern, twins Nellie
and Tillie, Mary, Jean and
Laurel.
The family lived on a
small ranch outside of Pie
Town, New Mexico, where
they had cattle, horses,
and other farm animals.
She spent time tending to
the animals, exploring and
caring for her younger siblings to help her
mother.
In 1948, the family packed up all of their
belongings in the farm truck with racks and
tarps over the top. With most of the kids
in the back, they traveled 1,300 miles to
Cave Junction, Oregon, where they spent
the first winter living in a large tent.
Deette graduated high school in 1950.
She had met her future husband, Russell
Dewayne St. John, at a dance, and on Sept.
26, 1950, they were married in Merlin,
Oregon. The new family relocated with
their firstborn daughter, Linda Deette, to
Hermiston, Oregon, in 1952, and two more
children would soon be born, daughter,
Alynn Deann, then son, Allen Dewayne.
Deette worked various jobs in the early
years of their marriage, from babysitting
to fieldwork and canneries, and hotel maid
work. She took her Civil Service Exam in
1968, and shortly after that she began her
career at the Umatilla Army Depot.
She performed maintenance in the
machine shop, inventory control in the
munitions department, and various other
jobs until she retired in 1988 after 20 years
of service. Deette received numerous
awards for her performance, including
a certificate of appreciation for having
accumulated 1,000 hours of sick pay.
She loved gardening, was an avid
rockhound, first-class fisherwoman and an
excellent hunter known
as a deadeye shot around the campfire.
Deette was a tireless worker; she couldn’t
stand not being busy, and she waged
a lifelong personal vendetta against
goatheads, wearing to a nub several hoes
over the years.
Deette is survived by her sisters, Jewell,
Fern, Tillie, Jean, Laurel; her brother,
Charley; also her children, Linda Davis
of Chino Valley, Arizona; Deann Cherry
of Hermiston, Oregon; and Allen St.
John of Scio, Oregon; five grandchildren,
Sandra Schilling, Adrian Filippi, Clifford
St. John, Ambra St. John, and Russell St.
John; four great-grandchildren, Carson
Schilling, Joseph Filippi, Marlow St. John
and Maeven St. John.
There will be a celebration of life on

Maxwell Siding Event Center, Hermiston.

Russell Dewayne St. John, 94, died on
May 5, 2020, in his home in Hermiston,
Oregon, with his family at his side.
Russell was born on Sept. 5, 1925, in
Naches, Washington, to Bert and Viola
St. John. He was the
only son in a family of
10, having seven sisters,
two of which who passed
young, Ladema, age 2, and
Marjorie, age 15. Sisters
are Erna, Dora (Doty),
Vera, Emogene (Emmy)
and Ruth.
The family relocated
to Cave Junction, Oregon,
where his father was
employed as a millwright
at a local sawmill. As a
youngster, Russell would
fish, hunt, and run trap lines for hides to
provide food and income for the family.
He attended school in Cave Junction in
a one-room, one-class schoolhouse. There
were children of all ages, with grades first
through eighth in one big classroom. He
graduated from the eighth grade in a class
of two.
As Russell became older, he worked
as a logger all around Josephine County
and northern California. The family again
pulled up roots and went to Lakeview,
Oregon, where he continued to work in the
woods.
Against his mother’s wishes, Russell
enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World
War II. He served as a
machinist mate on the USS Admiral
W.M. Sims, a troop transport ship ferrying
men all across the Pacific Theater,
including the Philippines, Okinawa and
Guam. He was then stationed in the Bering
Sea on the Aleutian Islands, Adak Island,
Alaska.
After the war ended, Russell came to
Emmett, Idaho, to his folk’s little farm. He
returned to the coast of northern California
to work as a logger in the Redwood
sawmills near Crescent City, California.
Russell met his future wife, Dora Deette
Mickey, at a dance in Cave Junction, and
they were married on Sept. 26, 1950. While
on an elk hunting trip to Eastern Oregon,
his sister, Erna, set him up to interview for
a job with the city of Hermiston. He was
hired on with the irrigation department.
Russell advanced through the ranks for
33 years before his retirement, ending
with being the superintendent of the street
department.
Together, they raised three children,
daughter, Linda Deette; daughter, Alynn
Deann; and son, Allen Dewayne. They
have five grandchildren, Sandra Schilling,
Adrain Filippi, Clifford St. John, Ambra St.
John and Russell St. John; and four great-
grandchildren, Carson Schillng, Joseph
Filippi, Marlow St. John and Maeven St.
John.
He was a master gardener who enjoyed
trying new seeds ordered by mail. Russell
hand-built custom fishing rods, carefully
choosing colorful threads to wrap the
guides. It truly was an art and his children
ate many dinners from TV trays so he
could take over the dining table with his
equipment. He was known as a wizard at
all things concrete, assisting many with
projects like pouring walks and such.
It was rumored that Russell may have
been a “sturgeon whisperer.” Many barely
legal fish were caught and feasted upon,
and stories of the occasional “one that
got away” being too big to keep anyway.
He loved all fishing, hunting, camping
with family, woodcutting and exploring
the backwoods with his wife of nearly 70
years.
There will be a celebration of life on
Saturday, Sept. 10 from 1-3 p.m. at the
Maxwell Siding Event Center, Hermiston.
Family and friends of Russell, please come
and share a memory.
