Morrow County comes together for school safety summit
Hermiston Herald
Morrow County educators and first
responders on Aug. 8 participated in
a regional school security summit in
Pendleton.
The InterMountain Education Ser-
vice District hosted the event at the
Pendleton Convention Center. About
200 people attended the summit.
School administrators from Morrow
and Ione school districts, along with
representatives from Boardman Police
Department, Boardman Fire Rescue
District and Morrow County Sheriff
Office participated in a review of the
regionally adopted school safety proto-
cols from the “I Love u Guys” Founda-
tion, according to a statement from the
Morrow County School District.
“The safety of our students and staff
are always our first priority,” Morrow
County School District Superintendent
Matt Combe said, adding the county
is fortunate to have “an outstanding
wraparound program” that includes
school counselors, Community Coun-
seling Solutions school based clinicians,
school resource officers, school nurses,
and CARE coordinators.
Morrow County Sheriff’s Office re-
ported it sent nine of its staff to the
training.
“We have participated with the
schools on many other trainings and
are always looking for ways to make all
of our children safer,” the sheriff’s office
stated on its Facebook page. “We look
forward to continuing to collaborate
with the schools and other agencies to
stop tragic school events before they
can occur and we train for the day, we
hope never comes.”
Combe reiterated that school safety
isn’t a one-and-done training. Mor-
row County schools will continue their
training on school safety and reunifica-
tion processes later in September sup-
ported by presenters from the “I Love u
Guys” foundation and the community
SROs.
Ione School District Superinten-
dent Keven Dinning delivered a similar
message.
“ISD will continue to focus on
safety,” he said, “and we look forward
to working with MCSD in September
to ensure that all services in Morrow
County are working collaboratively
to keep our staff, students and com-
munity safe.”
