Paul Melvin Oss
May 17, 1924 - May 11, 2022
Paul Melvin Oss, 97, passed to his
rest on May 11, 2022, at Guardian Angel
Homes in Hermiston, Oregon, where he
had made his home for the past six years.
Paul was born May 17, 1924,
in Poona, India, the eldest
son of missionary parents,
Pastor Melvin Oss and Mae
Carskadon Oss.
Paul's family returned
to the U.S.A. when he
was 7 years of age, and he
attended elementary schools
in Nebraska, Missouri and
Colorado. He graduated
from high school at the
Yakima Valley Academy,
Granger, Washington, in
1943. He served as a surgical
technician in the U.S. Army from 1948-
49 and was honorably discharged from
the Army Reserves in 1954. He attended
Walla Walla College and Lewis and Clark
State College before graduating from the
California College of Mortuary Science in
1951.
It was in Lewiston that Paul met the
lovely Jeanne Marie Johnson, a church
school teacher of grades 1-8 at the
Beacon Jr. Academy. At the time, Paul
was the handsome son of the Seventh-day
Adventist pastor in town. Paul and Jeanne
were married in 1950 and made their home
in Spokane following his graduation from
mortuary college.
Paul had served an apprenticeship at
Hazen & Jaeger Funeral Home in Spokane
prior to his graduation. A job was awaiting
him there when he returned in 1951 as a
dedicated mortician/funeral director. For
many years, he added a nighttime on-call
position to his day job at Hazen & Jaeger
to provide for the education of his four
children in private Christian schools and
for their many years of music lessons. Paul
and Jeanne retired to their beloved home
on Hayden Lake, Idaho, in 1989, Paul
having worked a total of 40 years for the
same employer.
Paul was a lifelong and active member
of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Through the years, he served as a choir
member, greeter, deacon and elder. Paul
worked his way through college as a roofer
and later failed to put away his tool belt
or paintbrush for long. He never tired of
the ongoing series of projects around his
house and was always a willing helper at
the homes of family and acquaintances, as
well.
Traveling with Jeanne in retirement
always brought a smile and fond memories.
One summer they left home with the
remark, "See you when we see you," and
began a 6,000-mile trek from one end of
the country to the other, taking in nearly
every state and visits with 30-plus relatives
along the way.
Most memorable was Paul and Jeanne's
family mission trip to India with several of
their children, grandchildren and cousins
in 2004. There they built two churches in
remote villages and were blessed to spend a
night at Lasalgoan Mission School, where
Paul's missionary parents had served as
principal and dean of women/nurse during
his childhood years.
Paul was "Grampy" to
10 beloved grandchildren
(Victoria, Andrew and Traci
Carroll; Nicole and Jennifer
Denmark; Patricia Carroll
Libby; Joshua, Jacob and
Jonas Oltman; Nikki Wiley)
and 16 great-grandchildren
(Maddox Carroll; Emil
Denmark-Adrianvala;
Grayson and Lyla Libby;
Emma, Bjorn, Kingston,
Paxton, Sophia, Anders,
Eleanor, Boden, Killian and
Espen Oltman; Zoey and
Jadyn Baldwin). Paul and Jeanne often
paired the grandchildren up with a cousin
for a week each summer at their home on
Hayden Lake.
Games of dominos, swimming across
the lake to Honeysuckle Beach, and
sipping blackberry milkshakes from Paul
Bunyan's Drive-In are treasured memories.
Grampy's cheese omelets, potato salad,
coleslaw and root beer floats could never
be beat in his grandchildren's eyes.
Paul is survived by his children, Guy
and Paula Oss Oltman of Hermiston;
Patricia Oss Carroll of Blanchard, Idaho;
Steven and Karen Oss Denmark of Silver
Spring, Maryland; John Oss and Greg
Nagy of Spokane.
In addition to his grandchildren and
great-grandchildren, Paul leaves behind
four nieces and nephews, Ronald and
Kelly Oss, Muriel Sar, and Kay Wilson.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 68
years (Jeanne Oss), by his parents, younger
brother (Donald Oss); and a darling
granddaughter, Jennifer Denmark.
Paul is particularly remembered for his
kindness, helpfulness, hard work ethic,
generosity, loyalty, and undying love
for God and family. His family eagerly
awaits that day when their dearest dad and
Grampy will arise from the grave to see
his Savior coming in the clouds. Jesus will
welcome Paul into the heavenly home He
has prepared with these words: "Well done,
my good and faithful servant ... Enter into
the joy of your Lord."
The Oss family wishes to express
special thanks to the staff of Guardian
Angel Homes for their many years of
treating "Papa" with the utmost love and
care. A graveside service is planned at the
Fairmount Memorial Gardens in Spokane
on Friday, May 20, at 9 a.m. A memorial
service follows in Hermiston on Saturday,
May 21, at 2 p.m. in the Guardian Angel
Homes parlor (Rose Arbor House).
Burns Mortuary in Hermiston and
Spokane Valley Hazen & Jaeger Funeral
Home kindly made the
arrangements. Memorial contributions
may be made to Camp Mivoden; c/o Upper
Columbia
Conference of SDA; 3715 S. Grove
Road, Spokane, WA 99224-6090.
