The Orbit Spinner at Fun- land Playground is broken. Hermiston Parks and Recreation blamed “aggres- sive usage by a few teenag- ers” for the damage. It was detached from its base and was removed from the playground. “We are in contact with the manufacturer to work on a repair,” the depart- ment stated in a Tuesday, April 26, Facebook post. It also asked the public not to play on the base, “as it is a hazard.” In addition, Parks and Rec asks people to use play- ground equipment for what it is intended for. Happy birthday, Helen! By ALLISON LINDLEY & REGENCY STAFF Special to the Hermiston Herald Hermiston resident Helen Gannon recently shared insights from her long life. She said a person should “work hard and laugh as often as you can.” She celebrated her 100th birthday with a party at Regency Hermis- ton on April 26. The centenarian was born April 26, 1922, in Rock Island, Illinois. She has two children, three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A Hermiston resident since 2016, she moved to town to live with her daughter. Her achievements include working for a telephone company for 39 years and being the first woman in Oregon to sell yellow page adver- tising. She worked real estate for 22 years and retired at 86. Helen came to Regency for short term recovery and left Regency the day of her birthday after com- pleting therapy. One of her fondest childhood memories was when she was 16 years old and was able to drive her grandfather’s Model A. When asked what’s your plan when you return home, she responded “I am going to enjoy a cup of coffee with cream and relax.” Also, she shared a cou- ple of things for which she was appreciative. “I am grateful for my family and that I still have all my marbles after 100 years,” she said.
