It will feature a series of community members read- ing in 20-minute segments. Participating readers who have confi rmed, include Hermiston City Manager Byron Smith, Hermiston School Superintendent Tricia Mooney, Agape House Exec- utive Director Mark Gomol- ski, Good Shepherd Health Care System CEO Brian Sims and Umatilla County Commissioner Dan Dorran. Other community leaders will be added as available. They will share from their favorite books across a vari- ety of genres. In addition, local authors Carol Clupny and Ben Arm- strong will share excerpts from their work. The library friends and Altrusans are asking the community to support their favorite readers by donating to literacy projects sponsored by both groups. Donations may be made electronically through the Friends of the Hermiston Public Library Facebook page, at the Herm- iston Public Library and at the Hermiston offi ce of Ban- ner Bank. Annual run/walk, this year on March 5, helps parents in need By TAMMY MALGESINI Hermiston Herald M eeting a need in the local com- munity in a simple way has turned into an annual fun run/ walk to collect diapers. In its eighth year, the Diaper Dash is Saturday, March 5, 9 a.m. at Herm- iston Church of the Naz- arene, 1520 W. Orchard Ave. Onsite registration begins at 8:30 a.m. The entry fee is a package of diapers — any size, brand or quantity. Gabrielle Fritz, the church’s offi ce manager, said the most-requested sizes for toddlers are 4, 5 and 6. In addition, people have donated wipes. “These are quite often requested by families and it’s so nice to be able to also have that available,” Fritz said. Participants can choose from the 5K or 10K route. Starting at the church, peo- ple will go through Riv- erfront Park, along the Oxbow Trail, and back up Northwest 11th Street to end up back at the church. The event, Fritz said, began shortly after Pas- tor Eric Fritz started at the church. When asking a group of young adults for ideas about how to meet a need in the community — the response was “diapers.” And it has continued to be “NEARLY EV- ERY WEEK, WE ARE AP- PROACHED FROM THOSE REQUESTING DIAPER HELP.
