New art exhibit opens at Josephy Center

OSEPH — A new art exhibit
featuring nature-inspired
works opens Jan. 7 at the Jose-
phy Center for Arts and Culture,
403 N. Main St.
An opening reception is
planned for Saturday, Jan. 8,
3-6 p.m. Live music starts at 4 p.m.
The show is titled “Nature in
the Abstract.” It will be on display
through Feb. 22.
The curators are Ellen Mor-
ris Bishop and Debbie Lind.
The judge is Susan Murrell, art
department faculty at Eastern
Oregon University.
Here is the show description:
“We usually observe nature as
discrete, recognizable subjects:
a mountain, a bird, a tree, a river,
etc. But in reality, our view of
nature is composed of textures,
shapes, forms and colors. We of-
ten fail to recognize these telling
patterns when viewing a familiar
object or scene. This exhibit
encourages artists to examine
and reveal nature beyond the fa-

changing world.”
Cash awards will be given for
fi rst, second and third place in
all categories ($100 $50, $25).
People’s Choice will earn a prize
of $50.
Categories are:
Nature in the Abstract: Work
that depicts a pattern or composi-
tion displayed by a subject as it

exists in nature. Work must be
based upon the elements of
abstract art: texture, shape, form,
color, and value and not be an
easily-identifi able representation
of any particular natural object or
subject.
Interpretations of Nature:
Work, inspired by subjects in the
real world, that employs shape,
form, lines and colors to create a
composition or interpretation of
the subject, showing subject as
the artist understands it, not as it
is. This category includes digitally
altered/manipulated photographs,
abstract painting and interpretive
abstract sculptures.
Youth: Work produced by art-
ists under the age of 18 that fi ts
in either category above, in any
eligible media.
