Live, love, bark
national dog
day is aug. 26

The Hermiston Her-
ald is going to the dogs —
National Dog Day is cel-
ebrated each year on Aug.
26. The day was chosen as it
coincides with the anniver-
sary of when founder Col-
leen Paige’s family adopted
their first dog.
She started the special
day in 2004 as a celebration
of all breeds — purebreds
and mutts alike. It honors
family dogs and working
dogs that give selflessly to
save lives, keep people safe
and provide comfort and
companionship. It’s Paige’s
hope that people will recog-
nize how many dogs need
homes — including those at
humane societies, shelters
and pure breed rescues.
A number of read-
ers responded to a request
to send in photos of their
canine kids and share what
makes them special. Here
is an introduction to several
furry friends that live in and
around Eastern Oregon.

Day photos at www.

Owner Mya Chapman/Umatilla
Ramsey is a 2-year-old husky mix. According to dog mama
Mya Chapman of Umatilla, he loves to play fetch and sneak
up on the couch. And evidently, he also likes to lounge in
the pool.
Dog grandma Annie Fowler/Kennewick
A 2-year-old male pit bull/Rhodesian ridgeback mix, Thor
kept East Oregonian sports writer Annie Fowler company
during the COVID-19 lockdown. She now looks forward to
visits from her grandpuppy to play Frisbee and enjoy treats.
Owner Jessica Dyer/Hermiston
An 11-year-old Dorkie (dachshund/yorkie mix), Max is extra
special as he’s been by Jessica Dyer’s side through thick and
thin. The Hermiston woman said her pooch is gentle and
kind and exhibits unconditional love. Max loves to extract
squeakers from his toys and then stockpiles them in a
couch cushion.
Owner Cindy Herrera/Hermiston
Harley, a white German shepherd, is 4 years old. Sometimes
donning her goggles, she loves to go for car rides with dog
mama Cindy Herrera of Hermiston.
