Annual film
festival set
for Aug. 12-15

AKER CITY — The 12th-an-
nual We Like ‘Em Short fi lm
festival features 74 fi lms from
around the world.
One is only 40 seconds long.
“It amazes me how much
storytelling can be done in such
a short time,” said Brian Vegter,
festival director.

“Pigeon” is featured in the We Like ‘Em Short fi lm festival.
The festival is Aug. 12-15.
All fi ve screenings will be at
Churchill School, 3451 Broadway
St. (enter through the parking lot
on 16th Street).
The festival opens Thursday,
Aug. 12, with a free, family-
friendly screening — drive-in
style — at 8 p.m. Parking is “fi rst
come, fi rst parked.” Attendees
are welcome to sit in lawn chairs
outside their vehicles.

• Friday, Aug. 13: 7 p.m.
• Saturday, Aug. 14: 1 p.m.

“On/Off ” is one of the animation submissions in this year’s festival.
• Sunday, Aug. 15: 6 p.m.
Tickets are $8 per screening,
or $30 for a festival pass. These
are available online at www.we-
likeemshort.com or at the door.
Vegter said each screening
features 13 to 16 fi lms.
“You get to see a huge variety
of how these fi lmmakers see the
world,” he said.
Submissions came from the
United States, The Netherlands,
Germany, New Zealand, Iran,
Italy, Canada, Cambodia, and
more. All selections are either
comedy or animation. Several
were inspired by COVID-19 and
quarantine and Vegter said it’s
interesting to see “how each
fi lmmaker took a diff erent ap-
proach to tell that story.”
