bachelor’s degree
computer engineering.
Samuel
Sheilds-Col-
bray of Hermiston was
awarded a bachelor’s degree
in kinesiology and health
during Iowa State Universi-
ty’s spring graduation cere-
monies May 7-8.
Iowa State awarded 4,176
undergraduate degrees, 609
graduate degrees and 143
veterinary medicine degrees.
Students had the opportunity
to attend in-person ceremo-
nies and celebrations.

receives fellowship
Hermiston
resident
Salma
Anguiano
has
received a public policy
and international affairs fel-
lowship through the Junior
Summer Institute at Carn-
egie Mellon University’s
Heinz College of Informa-
tion Systems and Public
Policy. The seven-week fel-
lowship prepares students
with rigorous coursework
for future careers in public
affairs.
Anguiano is a senior at
Whitman College in Walla
Walla, where she studies
politics and Chinese. She
was recently elected as the
new Whitman student body
president. In addition, she
leads Protecting Our Roots,
which seeks to get a federal
bill into Congress that pro-
tects undocumented work-
ers from deportation when
seeking compensation for an
injury.

George Fox names local
grad to dean’s list
Marlina Serratos of Irri-
gon was among those who
earned dean’s list recog-
nition at George Fox Uni-
versity for the spring 2021
semester. Serratos also
earned a bachelor’s degree
in elementary education
during spring commence-
ment exercises.
Traditional undergrad-
uate students must earn a
3.5 grade point average or
above on 12 or more hours
of graded work to earn a
spot on the dean’s list.
Local grad earns
distinction at Whitman
Salma Anguiano of
Hermiston earned academic
distinction for the most
recent semester at Whitman
College.
This recognition is given
to students who have com-
pleted a minimum of 12
credits, passed all credits
attempted, and have earned
a grade-point average of 3.5
or higher on no fewer than
nine graded credits during
the semester.

The Honor Society of Phi
Kappa Phi, the nation’s old-
est and most selective col-
legiate honor society for all
academic disciplines.
They are among approxi-
mately 30,000 students, fac-
ulty, professional staff and
alumni to be initiated into
Phi Kappa Phi each year.
Membership is by invita-
tion only and requires nom-
ination and approval by a
chapter.
Only the top 10% of
seniors and 7.5% of juniors
are eligible for membership.
Graduate students in the top
10% of the number of can-
didates for graduate degrees
may also qualify, as do fac-
ulty, professional staff and
alumni who have achieved
scholarly distinction.
