Gospel quartet to celebrate Christ in song
HERMISTON HERALD
Liberty Quartet, a South-
ern gospel group from Idaho,
is celebrating its 25 years of
ministry.
While the coronavirus
pandemic has altered some
of the quartet’s touring plans,
they are looking forward to
sharing God’s love through
song during an upcoming
concert at Hermiston Church
of the Nazarene.
The free performance is
Sunday, Oct. 4, at 7 p.m. at
the church, 1520 W. Orchard
Ave., Hermiston. People are
invited to support the group
by making a love offering.
In accordance with state
COVID-19 mandates, masks
and social distancing (includ-
ing designated seating with 6
feet between people not liv-
ing in the same household) is
required. In addition, a hand
sanitizing station is available
at the entrance.

regardless if people are fans
of Southern gospel music,
they should come for the
evening.

Applications open for
educational awards
Soroptimist International
of the Greater Hermiston
Area is accepting applica-
tions for their “Live Your
Dream” Educational and
Training Awards for Women.
A pair of awards will
be given in the amounts of
$1,000 and $500. To be eli-
gible, applicants must have
the primary fi nancial respon-
sibility for themselves and
their dependents. Also, they
must be attending or have
been accepted into an under-
graduate degree program or
a vocational skills training
program.
Applications are avail-
able and can be submitted
online at bit.ly/LYDA-ap-
ply. The deadline to apply
is Nov. 15 and the recipients
will be announced in March.
The winner of the $1,000
award may be considered
for further awards at Sorop-
timist’s regional and federa-
tion level. Soroptimist Inter-
national of the Americas
created the awards in 1972
to help women around the
world further their educa-
tion and the economic well
being of their families. Since
2007, the Hermiston group
has given 22 of the awards
— for a total of $15,000.
The 2020 recipients are
Amanda Montanez, who is
attending Blue Mountain
Community College and
working towards a degree
in psychology and Sabrina
Johnson, who is attending
Charter College to obtain
her medical assistant certif-
icate. Both women live in
Hermiston.

Community garden gets
grant for raised beds
Lovin’ Spadeful Com-
munity Garden in Hermis-
ton will be more accessi-
ble next year after a $4,800
grant from the Good Shep-
herd Community Health
Foundation.
Garden director Chelle
Hankinson said the money
will be used to create several
raised beds at the garden that
are easier to care for people
with mobility issues.
“You will certainly enjoy
the enthusiasm these men
exhibit while serving and
singing to the Lord,” Fritz
said.
Liberty Quartet cherishes
the opportunity to connect
with people and make new
friends wherever they go.
They have had the opportu-
nity to share the stage with
several groups, including the
Gaither Vocal Band, Leg-
acy Five, Greater Vision,
the Booth Brothers, the
Hoppers, the Isaacs and the
Collingsworth Family.
While featuring every-
thing from high-energy per-
formances to moments of
contemplation,
Liberty
Quartet always offers con-
gregations a concert of wor-
ship. Their ministry bridges
multiple generations, which
celebrates the culture for
Christ.

She said they hope to
install the new beds before
the weather turns cold so
that they will be ready to go
next season.
Lovin’ Spadeful Commu-
nity Garden is located on the
north side of the Good Shep-
herd Health Care System
campus at 610 N.W. 11th
St., and has 80 plots avail-
able each summer for com-
munity members to reserve.
Candidates forum
scheduled for Oct. 6
The Hermiston Cham-
ber of Commerce is plan-
ning a forum for Hermiston
City Council and Umatilla
County Board of Commis-
sioners candidates on Oct. 6.
The forum will begin
at 6 p.m. and will be held
at the Hermiston Commu-
nity Center, 415 S. High-
way 395. Limited seating,
spaced 6 feet apart, will be
available and masks will be
required. The event will be
livestreamed by Hermiston
School District online.

County Board of Commis-
sioners. David McCarthy,
Rod Hardin, Doug Prim-
mer, Nancy Peterson and
Maria Duron are running for
the four at-large seats on the
Hermiston City Council.
Umatilla County
cultural organizations
receive grants
The Eastern Oregon
Trade and Event Center is
one of more than a dozen
cultural organizations in
Umatilla County set to
receive more than $500,000
for relief from the coronavi-
rus pandemic, according to a
press release.
A total of $25.7 million
in grants is being distrib-
uted to 621 organizations
throughout the state by
the Oregon Cultural Trust,
which is working with
local cultural coalitions to
provide relief for organi-
zations that have suffered
economic losses due to the
pandemic.
In Umatilla County, the
Eastern Oregon Trade and
Event Center ($209,548) is
slated for the largest sum of
funding. Other notable fund-
ing awards included Happy
Canyon Company Inc.
($67,208), the Confederated
Tribes of the Umatilla Indian
Reservation ($59,383) and
Stadium
Entertainment,
LLC ($51,925).
