Special Olympians make money at Melonville
HERMISTON HERALD
The smiles were plentiful as Hermis-
ton/Pendleton Special Olympics Local
Program #510 raised $2,100 during
a fundraiser at Melonville Comedy
Festival.
Coaches and athletes sold concessions
as well as raffl e tickets during the Jan. 24
event at Eastern Oregon Trade and Event
Center in Hermiston. Chris Gibbs won a
snacks and beverage basket, which was
created by Rita McDougal, a longtime
Special Olympics supporter; and Shawn
Callahan won a cooler of beef donated by
Kietzke Angus.
Kristi Smalley, Special Olympics com-
munications manager, expressed appreci-
ation to Melonville organizer Stuart Rice.
In addition to providing the fundraising
opportunity to the group, Rice made a
$1,000 donation to Special Olympics.
“We greatly appreciate the positive
exposure for our program and are always
astounded by the generosity of the audi-
ence members,” Smalley said.
Special Olympics provides year-
around training and athletic competitions
for people of all ages with intellectual
disabilities. There is no charge for ath-
letes to participate.
Local athletes are currently training in
basketball and powerlifting, with regional

6:52 a.m.— A woman caused a disturbance on Northwest
11th Street.
12:53 p.m.— On South Highway 395 , two men were report-
edly smoking marijuana behind a building. The caller asked to
have them removed.
5:42 p.m.— A woman was yelling inside a store on West High-
land Avenue.
6:25 p.m.— A domestic disturbance was reported on North-
west 10th Street.
8:56 p.m.— On Southeast Third Street, a burglary was report-
ed.

1:30 p.m.— A neighbor is concerned about two dogs living at
a residence near Greenwood Park. They called to report the
dogs are left out day and night, and appear to not be fed.
2:25 p.m.— Someone’s boyfriend was in the process of kicking
down their front door on Northeast Seventh Street.
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 20
8:30 a.m.— A burglary was reported on North First Street.
1:43 p.m.— An arrest was made after a caller reported three
males sleeping behind a storefront on East Main Street who
were reportedly “high as kites.”
3:23 p.m.— A woman called to report she believed her
daughter may be in danger somewhere around Hermiston
but didn’t off er a reason as to why.
3:30 p.m.— A man reported he has been harassed via Twitter
and through text message for the past year.

3:32 p.m.— A fi ght occurred at Hodge Park on East Highland
Avenue.
4:09 p.m.— A Shih Tzu dog wearing a multi-colored scarf was
reported lost.
7:37 p.m.— A domestic disturbance was reported on East
Newport Avenue.

2:30 a.m.— A drunk driver was reported on North First Street.
4:13 a.m.— A disturbance was reported on Southeast Sixth
Street between neighbors.
9:24 p.m.— A domestic disturbance was reported on North-
west Sixth Street.
SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 23
2:28 a.m.— A possible domestic disturbance was reported on
West Sunland Avenue.
10:04 a.m.— Police took a report for a domestic disturbance
on West Ridgeway Avenue.
12:40 p.m.– On West Madrona Avenue, large branches
became entangled with the power lines there due to windy
weather.
12:50 p.m.— A railroad crossing arm snapped on West Elm
Avenue and North First Place.
MONDAY, FEBRUARY 24
7:56 a.m.— On East Beech Avenue, a man collapsed on the
sidewalk and was pronounced dead. According to law en-
forcement, there were not suspicions of foul play.
11:06 a.m.— Hermiston police took a report for a possible
burglary on East Main Street.
4:10 p.m.— A week ago, a man reported, someone drew a
“male body part” on the corner of his property.
9:25 p.m.— A man and woman were reportedly physically
fi ghting on West Sunland Avenue and Southwest Sandy
Drive.
