Hermiston’s
senior defensive tackle, who
missed last week’s game
with an injury, returned to
block two punts, had three
tackles and a sack as the
Bulldogs rolled to a 37-7
Mid-Columbia Conference
victory over Southridge on
Thursday night at Lampson
Stadium.
It was the first win of the
season for the Bulldogs (1-4
MCC), who also got two
touchdowns apiece from
Trevor Wager and Broc
Remmer.
“It was a great coming
out party for him,” Herm-
iston coach David Faae-
teete said of Stewart.
“Winning is always good.
Football hadn’t been any
fun the month of September.
Tonight, we did some good
things and finished drives.”
Wagner scored on a
10-yard pass play, and on a
1-yard run.
“It’s good to get a win,”
Wagner said. “Us hav-
ing run in the game made a
difference.”
Stewart’s first blocked
punt ended up in a safety
for the Bulldogs and a 23-7
lead.
The Bulldogs got the
ball on the ensuing kickoff
and promptly scored again,
with Remmer scoring on
a 10-yard pass from Sam
Schwirse for a 30-7 lead.
The Suns (0-5 MCC)
punted on their next posses-
sion, and it got blocked by
Stewart, putting Hermiston
on the Southridge 14-yard
line.
“I was surprised I got the
second one,” Stewart said.
“I was getting blocked and
I went that way. It’s great
being next to my Dawgs on
the field. I’m happy we got
the win tonight.”
Wagner finished the scor-
ing with a 1-yard run.
Hermiston took the lead
less than 4 minutes into the
game as Remmer hauled in a
24-yard pass from Schwirse.
Garrett Walchli looked
to give the Bulldogs a
two-touchdown lead 3 min-
utes later, returning a punt
58 yards to the end zone. A
penalty negated the score.
The Bulldogs then turned
its attention to defense,
where they stopped South-
ridge on fourth down at the
Hermiston 16-yard line.
Hermiston would add
another score with 1:58
left in the second quarter as
Schwirse hit Wagner on a
crossing route for a 10-yard
touchdown.
The Dawgs took a 14-7
lead at the half after giving
up a late touchdown to the
Suns.

remaining in the first half,
but two plays later, Schwirse
was picked off by Fidel
Gutierrez, who returned the
ball to the Hermiston 1-yard
line with 1.2 seconds left.
Slatter punched the ball
in from the 1-yard line as
time expired, and Lance
Spaniel converted the PAT

PREVIEW
Dawgs to take on league-leading Chiawana
By ANNIE FOWLER

There’s no way to sugar-coat it
— Hermiston will have its hands
full Friday night when Chiawana
visits Kennison Field.
The Riverhawks, ranked No. 9
in this week’s Class 4A poll, are
4-0 in Mid-Columbia Conference
play, and 4-1 overall after a 21-20
loss to top-ranked Union two
weeks ago.
“We can’t focus on what they
do,” Bulldogs coach David Faae-
teete said. “We have to be focused
on us being prepared for Friday
night. They play good team foot-
ball, their defense swarms, and
they don’t play selfish. You can
see their competitive spirit on film.
That’s fun to watch.”
The Bulldogs (1-4 MCC) are
DINO DASH
It’s been centuries since dinosaurs roamed the earth, but Friday night,
they are making a return visit. Simmons Insurance Agency is partnering
with Hermiston High School athletics to raise money for breast cancer
awareness.
At Hermiston’s football game against Chiawana, there will be a dinosaur
race at halftime. The 40-yard dash will feature an array of dinosaurs.
Choose your dino, buy a ticket for that dino, and if it wins, you and
everyone who bought a ticket for that dino will go into a drawing for two
tickets to the Oregon-Oregon State Civil War Game.
Tickets are $1 each, six for $5 or an arm’s length for $20. Tickets will be
available at the game, or at Simmons Insurance Agency, 702 E Main St.
Proceeds will be donated to the Good Shepherd Breast Cancer Support
Group.
coming off a 37-7 win over South-
ridge last week — a game that saw
the defense take over and force
turnovers.
“The game plan is to stop the
run and rally to the pass,” Faae-
teete said. “Offensively, we have
to utilize the size of our line. If we
show up and do what we did the
last game, we have our chances. At
the end of the day, everyone has to
show up Friday night.”
If there is one thing Chiawana
coach Steve Graff has noticed
about Hermiston, it’s the offen-
sive line, anchored by seniors
Chase Bradshaw and Dustyn
Coughlin.
“They have guys over 300
pounds,” Graff said. “They’re as
big as me, but taller. Their running
back is also a big kid who runs the
ball hard, and their quarterback
gets the ball out quick. We will
have to corral them.”
The Riverhawks have gotten a
lot of milage out of senior running
back Gabe Schilz, who has run for
591 yards and 13 touchdowns.
“He has done a good job,” Graff
said of Schilz. “We like to run and
throw. Our offensive line is still a
work in progress, and they make
some mistakes, but Gabe makes
them look good.”
When they turn to the pass-
ing game, Chiawana sophomore
quarterback JP Zamora has a fleet
of speedsters to throw to, includ-
ing seniors Dion Lee and Cameron
Breier, one of the top 400 runners
in the state.
It’s on defense where the River-
hawks have done the most damage.
They have given up just 48 points
in five games — 21 of which were
to Union.
Aiden Mason leads the Riv-
erhawks with four interceptions,
and they also have a handful of
wrestlers who provide grit and
a no-quit mentality, including
senior linebacker Riley Cissne.
“That’s where we have been
pretty good,” Graff said. “We
have some good kids with some
speed and that helps. Riley runs the
show out there.”
