Bulldogs take out Suns in four sets
By ANNIE FOWLER
STAFF WRITER
Last year, Southridge had
its way with Hermiston all
four times they faced off in
volleyball.
The Bulldogs turned that
around Thursday night, beat-
ing the Suns 25-14, 25-26,
22-25, 25-16 in Mid-Colum-
bia Conference play.
“Today, it fi nally came
full circle,” said Hermis-
ton junior Kendall Dowdy,
who fi nished the night with
17 assists, six kills and nine
digs. “We got a taste of vic-
tory. It’s the start of a new
win streak. This is just the
beginning.”
With the win, Hermiston
(3-3, 2-3 MCC) is on a three
match win streak.
“We are still learning to
win,” Bulldogs coach Amy
Dyck said. “We have three
sophomores who are start-
ers. That focus and confi -
dence to win in three — we
are still trying to get there. In
the fourth (set) we were dial-
ing it in.”
The Suns won all four
matches against the Bull-
dogs last year, including two
in conference play, and two
in the MCC-GSL regional
tournament. But Southridge
(1-5, 1-5 MCC) has just one
returning player from last
year, and has had its share of
growing pains.
“We are very young,”
Suns coach Emily Otto said,
“but we have a lot of poten-
tial. We have shown a lot of
growth since the start of the
year. They need to trust and
believe in themselves, and
trust each other.”
Thursday, the Bull-
dogs quickly took the fi rst
two sets, getting solid serv-
ing from Halee Stubbs and
Emma Combes in the fi rst
set, while Grace Vertrees
and Kambree Baker com-
bined for 10 points in the
second.
The third set wasn’t so
pretty for the Bulldogs.
Unforced errors accounted
for 13 of the Suns 25 points.
Hermiston frittered away
a 13-10 lead, and the Bull-
dogs found themselves
trailing 19-14 after Jordan
Missett served up four con-
secutive points.
The Bulldogs got as close
as 20-19 and 24-22, but a
misplayed ball by Avery
Treadwell gave the Suns the
win.
There was no doubt who
was in charge of the fourth
set. Combes served the fi rst
four points of the set, and
after the Suns came back to
tie the score at 6-6, the Bull-
dogs pulled away for good.
Vertrees served fi ve
points for a 12-6 lead, and
a steady stream of unforced
errors by the Suns (14 for
the set) had Hermiston on
top 20-11.
Southridge made a late
run with four points to pull
within 21-16, but it wasn’t
enough.
“Obviously, we are all
very competitive,” Dyck
said of the two teams. “We
had a rough year here last
year. I wanted to come in
here and win. We put in a lot
of work in the summer and
it’s paying off.”
Vertrees led the Bulldogs
with 10 kills and fi ve aces,
while Stubbs had 19 digs.
Combes had 12 digs and four
aces; Malayna Anderson six
kills and three blocks; and
Courtnee West 12 assists,
eight digs and four kills.
Nicole Parker led the
Suns with 10 kills and seven
digs. Mattie Stayrook had
seven kills, and Missett 22
assists and seven digs.
Note
Stubbs, a senior, was
named a Week 3 WIAA Ath-
lete of the Week. The libero
had a combined 66 digs in
matches against Kennewick,
Pasco and Davis. She had 37
digs against Kennewick, and
passed a 2.1 average in serve
receive.

Dawgs show growth in second Richland contest
By BRETT KANE

Richland may have shut
out Hermiston, but it was a
day of growth for the girls
soccer team.
The top-ranked Bomb-
ers had previously shut out
Hermiston 12-0 in their sec-
ond match of the season ear-
lier in the year, but on Satur-
day afternoon the Bulldogs
held them to just four goals
for a 4-0 Mid-Columbia
Conference loss.
“It was a different team
today,” Hermiston coach
Freddy Guizar said. “Our
girls stepped up. Rich-
land’s midfi eld is talented
and aggressive. We carried a
momentum knowing that our
girls can be competitive.”
Bulldogs senior keeper
Lanie Gomez grabbed a
pair of saves in the opening
fi ve minutes, but Richland
remained relentless in their
attack. Bombers junior mid-
fi elder Ashley Tonthat had
two ensuing shots on goal
before she assisted junior
forward McKenna Martinez
in the fi rst goal of the match
in the 11th minute.
Martinez returned 14
minutes later for another
goal that fl ew just above
Gomez’s reach.
“They
played
hard
today,” Gomez said of Rich-
land. “We knew what to
expect from them. They
didn’t play any better or
worse (than the last time).”
Hermiston sophomore
forward Jizzelle Gonzalez
had a shot on goal after inter-
cepting a Richland throw-in,
but Bombers senior keeper
Kyah Weikum was quick to
get the save.
Tonthat
drove
the
ball downfi eld, swerved
Gomez’s attempted save,
and notched her match’s sec-
ond goal for a 3-0 lead in the
31st minute. Gomez dived
to block Martinez from post-
ing another goal, but junior
forward Ellie Marsh evaded
Gomez for Richland’s last

goal of the match, and a 4-0
halftime advantage.
Martinez had another
shot on goal in the fi rst min-
ute of the second half, but
the ball soared over the goal
post.
In the 60th minute,
Hermiston junior midfi elder
Jayden Ray squared up for a
goal, but Weikum continued
to hold the Dawgs scoreless.
Ray missed a penalty
kick with 14:47 left to play
that would have put Herm-
iston on the board. Despite
ending the day without a
goal, the Bulldogs were able
to keep the Bombers away
from the net for the entirety
of the second half.
“It’s been hard to get that
connection and chemistry
going,” Gomez said after
the match, “but we made a
lot of progress today. We’ve
grown closer as a family. I
don’t think (Richland) was
expecting us to come out as
hard as we did. We stepped
it up and gave them a run for
their money.”
With the win, the Bomb-
ers (6-1, 6-1 MCC) remain
the No. 1 team in MCC
action. Hermiston (1-7, 1-6
MCC) is ranked No. 8 in the
league standings.
“They were a lot more
organized today,” Richland
coach Justin Almquist said.
“Their competitive spirit
was up. They gave us a bet-
ter game.”
The Bulldogs were back
on the road Tuesday night for
a conference contest against
the No. 2-ranked Chiawana
Riverhawks, which started
after the Hermiston Herald’s
deadline.
