noon that the project had been a “doozy” but he was
glad it was fi nally complete.
“It’s been a tough project, because this building is
very old,” he said. “After we started opening things up,
this building had a lot of surprises.”
The red brick building on the corner of Main
Street and Northeast Second Street was built in 1906.
Throughout its history it served a wide variety of pur-
poses, including a library, bar, shops, the headquarters
of the East Oregonian and RoeMark’s Mens and West-
ern Wear.
The shorter sides of the building serve as Simmons
Insurance offi ces and the salad shop Veg Out, but the
main section has been empty since 2012. Now it will
serve as the Union Club, a coffee by day, bar by night
establishment that also serves pastries and savory pies.
Almost 75 years to the day from when Hermiston’s
original Union Club opened, the business’s rebirth was
complete Friday with a grand opening.
Owner Justin Doyle told the crowd of nearly 100
gathered for the ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday after-
