By TAMMY MALGESINI COMMUNITY EDITOR The Hermiston Public Library recently turned the page with lon- ger hours, which started earlier this week. The library is now open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. — an extra hour each eve- ning. Library director Mark Rose said the change provides the pub- lic with an additional hour in the evening to hold classes, use library resources and peruse the collec- tion and check out items. The Friday/Saturday hours remain the same from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. “To serve you better, we will be open more hours,” Rose said. “These new hours will help get a little more homework done, a bit more time to look for a job or housing, or to find the movie you’re been wanting to see.” To help spread the word about Photo contributed by Pac/West Communications Mark Rose, Hermiston Public Library director, encourages people to take advantage of recently extended hours. To help spread the word about the change, people can enter an online contest for a chance to win a Chromebook. test. The 95-year-old Irrigon man is a World War II vet- eran who spent most of his time during the war in the South Pacific. Richard Scar- lett and Wanda Hunt of Uma- tilla made arrangements to meet him at the Stanfield Senior Center for lunch. Then, Reid’s granddaughters, Michelle Williams, who lives in Utah, and Heather Kandle, who resides in North Dakota, showed up. Unbeknownst to Reid, his daughter, Janie Kepler, had made arrange- ments for the surprise. Reid lived most of his life in Heppner, moving to Irri- gon about 10 years ago. He worked in the lumber indus- try and has made furniture, bird houses and wooden boxes that he sells at area farmers markets. Scarlett and Hunt met Reid about 10 years ago and said he has a smile that lights up a room. Later after a pizza din- ner, Reid headed to Hat Rock where Scarlett and Hunt took him on a sunset cruise on the Columbia River on their pon- toon boat. Hunt said Reid commented, “This is a birth- day to remember.” WORSHIP COMMUNITY Photo contributed by Wanda Hunt Robert Reid of Irrigon recently had a memorable 95th birthday as his granddaughters, Michelle Williams, who lives in Utah, and Heather Kandle, who lives in North Dakota, made a surprise trip to Eastern Oregon.
