LEGO store opens
in Hermiston
By JADE MCDOWELL
NEWS EDITOR
When a Corvallis LEGO
store announced they were
going out of business, Julie
and Bobby Lara saw the
perfect opportunity to get
into the LEGO business
themselves.
They purchased most of
the store’s stock and opened
JB Brick Company in
Hermiston at the beginning
of August.
The store, located inside
295 E Main St. in Suite
#3W, offers up new and
used sets of LEGOs as well
as loose pieces by the bag
and a “build your own fig-
ure” station where kids can
comb through bins of pants,
shirts, heads and hair for the
perfect combination.
“Star Wars LEGOs have
definitely been the most
popular since opening,”
Julie said. “Boys, girls,
adults — everybody is look-
ing for them.”
They also buy LEGOs
from people, from full col-
lectors’ sets to the “rub-
bermaid container in the
garage.”
Julie said she and Bobby
recently took home a 3,000-
piece Death Star to build
and make sure all the pieces
were there since it did not
come with a parts list. They
didn’t mind — LEGOs are
as much a hobby as they are
a business for the Laras.
Julie said her love of
LEGOs started when she
was a young child.
“My dad got me into
them,” she said. “He would
buy me a set and I would
immediately take it apart
because I would want to
build something new.”
Her husband, a union
crane operator, didn’t under-
stand her hobby at first, but
he showed his support by
building display cases for
her ever-growing collection
at home.
“Then he discovered their
construction line, and he
was like, ‘Wow, this really
moves, just like I do on my
job!’” she said, pointing to a
giant blue crane on display
in the shop. “So now he has
his own collection.”
She said they are excited
to share their hobby with
people and hope they
come down and check out
the new store, which is
open Wednesday through
Saturday.

Brockett was riding a
2007 Honda motorcycle,
and was transported to Good
Shepherd Medical Center.
Hermiston Police chief
Jason Edmiston said that the
report has been sent to the

Hermiston Family Aquatic Center to reopen Aug. 31
HERMISTON HERALD
The Hermiston Family Aquatic Center is expected to
reopen to the public on Aug. 31 after flooding put it out of
commission.
On the morning of Aug. 20 city staff discovered that
the pool’s mechanical room had flooded, submerging five
pumps that were not designed to get wet. A local repair
shop is working to take the pumps apart, dry them out and
replace damaged parts.
Parks and recreation director Larry Fetter had origi-
nally stated the “optimistic” timeline would be reopening
the aquatic center on Saturday, but on Thursday said the
repairs will take longer than that.
The pool will be available for Hermiston High School’s
swim team practices starting Tuesday, but due to most of
the pool’s lifeguards going back to school next week,
it will only be open for public swim Aug. 31-Sept. 2.
Lap swimming will be available from 6-7 p.m. Monday
through Friday starting Sept. 3.
Tri-Cities Cancer Center opens Hermiston satellite office
By JADE MCDOWELL
NEWS EDITOR
Cancer patients won’t have to travel
as far for all of their appointments after
the Tri-Cities Cancer Center opened a
satellite office in Hermiston.
The new office is located in the
Good Shepherd Medical Center plaza,
600 N.W. 11th St., Suite E-23. While
radiation treatment will not take place
there, patients will be able to visit for
other types of appointments, such as
consultations, follow-ups and support
services.
“We want to ensure that our patients
are served well across the region,”
Chuck DeGooyer, CEO of the Tri-Cit-
ies Cancer Center, said in a statement.
“With many of our patients coming
from Hermiston and the surround-
ing communities, we want to make it
easier for them to receive their cancer
care and support close to their home.”
They will partner with Good Shep-
herd and Kadlec Medical Center of
Richland, allowing Good Shepherd
doctors to refer patients just down the
hall for consultations.
The center will initially be open
every Monday, and will be staffed by
radiation oncologist Dr. Guy Jones.
Ken Gamboa, director of market-
ing for TRCC, said the center plans
to offer some public education and
screening events at the Hermiston cen-
ter as well.
The Tri-Cities Cancer Center was
started by Kadlec, Lourdes Health
and Trios Health hospitals in 1994 as
a free-standing nonprofit cancer treat-
ment center. It offers a range of ser-
vices including treatment, support
groups, a survivorship clinic, a natu-
ropath clinic, chaplain and fitness
programs.
