Also, for the fi rst time in nearly a decade, one of the performances will be staged in Hermiston. For its 34th season, Beau Benson, conductor and artis- tic director, and the OES board of directors have an exciting lineup, said J.D. Kindle, executive director. This year also marks a two- year initiative to program more works by living com- posers into the symphony’s major symphonic concerts, he said. In addition to announc- ing the 2019-20 season con- certs, the symphony is hold- ing a promotional raffl e to encourage season ticket orders. The drawing will be held during the Oregon East Symphony’s season opening concert. The Sunday, Nov. 10 per- formance at Pendleton’s Vert Auditorium features “She- nanigan” by American-Ca- nadian-Hungarian composer Kati Agócs. It will be per- formed alongside Johannes Brahms’ “Symphony No. 3.” The program also includes a piano concerto with guest soloist Simon Karakulidi. A young Russian pianist, Karakulidi is com- ing to Eastern Oregon via Portland Piano Internation- al’s Rising Stars program, which highlights the bright- est up-and-coming piano tal- ent in the world. The July event was held in Portland and included fi rst place winner Roma Hall of the Hermiston TOPS group as an Oregon state cham- pion for losing 100 pounds. In addition, there were 18 chapter queen winners, including Lor- raine Nagel of the Hermiston TOPS group, who lost 61 pounds. Barbara Buckwalter said Nagel is now a KOPS (Keep Off Pounds Sensibly). People interested in learning more about TOPS are invited to attend a meeting. The Hermiston group meets Tuesdays at Landmark Missionary Baptist Church, 125 E.
