People paws-itively
love their pooches
1.
Man’s (and woman’s) best friend took
center stage earlier this week as Monday,
Aug. 26 was National Dog Day. Local read-
ers provided photos and shared details about
what makes their furry friends so special.
A special shout-out to Katrina Ortiz of
Hermiston, who shared about Mason, a Ger-
man shorthaired pointer. Her 5-year-old
pooch went missing in April and she hasn’t
given up hope of fi nding Mason.

“He was not just a dog, he was a member
of the family,” Ortiz said.
National Dog Day, which was started in
2004 by Colleen Paige, celebrates all breeds
— purebreds and mutts. It honors family
dogs and working dogs that give selfl essly
to save lives, keep people safe and provide
comfort and companionship. Paige chose
the date to coincide with the anniversary of
when her family adopted their fi rst dog.

1) Mason, 5, a beloved German shorthaired pointer, disappeared from his Hermiston home in April. Katrina Ortiz is still hopeful that he will return. 2) Tank, who is a little more than
a year old, is a pit bull. Alicia Rogers said her 70-pound hunk is the most spoiled child she has. She loves his personality traits and said Tank is the biggest baby. 3) Jax, a 3-year-old
German shepherd, is Cassie Greene’s best friend. In addition to his sweet nature, he’s also protective of his pack. Jax likes to go camping and visit his cousins in Hermiston. “His
personality and ears make him extra special,” Greene said. 4) Lindsey Burns said her son, Baird, has a best friend in Yerry, a Corgi. The 9-year-old pooch, who is owned by Burns’
parents, loves to lick Baird’s face and go for wagon rides with him. 5) Alvin is a mixed breed dog that was rescued last August in Stanfi eld. Due to his level of fearfulness, he was
unable to be adopted. However, Robin Barker of Fuzz Ball Animal Rescue said Alvin chills at her Hermiston home and provides comfort to foster dogs and cats in her care. 6) Drake,
a 12-week-old, recently joined the Morris pack in Umatilla. 7) A 7-month-old bloodhound, Daisy has found a best friend in her human sister, Charly. Mama Britiany Jemmett said
Daisy follows the baby wherever she goes and is the fi rst one there when Charly cries. 8) Kandi Girl, a 1-year-old American Bully, is a special part of the McDaniel household. “She’s
not just a dog she’s family,” said Amber McDaniel.
