National Night Out creates connections
Echo & Stanfi eld host
Aug. 13 events
By TAMMY MALGESINI
COMMUNITY EDITOR
The goal of National
Night Out is to encourage
people to get out to meet
their neighbors and to pro-
mote
police-community
partnerships.
A national initiative,
NNO helps in creating safer
communities as people
become familiar with what’s
going on in their neighbor-
hood. In addition, it pro-
vides a relaxed atmosphere
to interact with law enforce-
ment personnel and other
fi rst responders.
While National Night
Out is offi cially Aug. 6,
Echo and Stanfi eld pushed
their festivities back a week
so it doesn’t confl ict with
the Umatilla County Fair.
Both towns will host activi-
ties on Tuesday, Aug. 13.
ECHO
In its 13th year of cele-
brating National Night Out,
Echo’s event will run from
6-8 p.m. at George Park and
the Echo Masonic Lodge.
A free barbecue includes
hot dogs, hamburgers, chips
and drinks. Youths can par-
ticipate in a bicycle rodeo.
Kids are encouraged to
bring their bikes and a hel-
met, and take a spin through
the course for a chance to
win prizes. Also, local busi-
nesses have donated items
for door prizes and raffl e
drawings. In addition, peo-
ple can play a few rounds of
bingo and other games will
provide fun for all ages.
Also, a resident will be
recognized as the Neighbor
of the Year (nominations
are accepted through Aug.
10). For more information,
call Echo City Hall at 541-
376-8411 or Stanfi eld Police
Chief Bryon Zumwalt at
541-449-3245.
STANFIELD
After a 13-year hiatus, the
Stanfi eld Police Department
resumed National Night Out
festivities three years ago.
This year’s event is set for
6-9 p.m. at Bard Park.
Activities include a free
barbecue dinner, a bike
rodeo (prizes provided) and
a raffl e drawing. In addition,
the evening concludes with
Stanfi eld Public Library’s
Movie in the Park. The free
fl ick, which starts at dusk, is
“Pokemon Detective Pika-
chu.” The 2019 action-ad-
venture comedy is rated
PG. Refreshments also are
available.
Also, one special citi-
zen will receive the Good
Neighbor of the Year award.
There’s still time to nom-
inate a deserving citizen,

as the deadline is Aug.
10. Nomination forms are
available at city hall, the
library and police depart-
ment. For more informa-
tion, visit www.cityofstan-
fi eld.com or call Zumwalt at
541-449-3245.
In its 36th year, National
Night Out boasts connec-
tions in 16,000 communi-
ties — reaching out to 38
million neighbors. For more
