Watermelon festival features slices of summer fun

Watermelons take center
stage on Saturday during the
Irrigon Watermelon Festival.
In addition to water-
melon by the slice (50 cents)
and a seed-spitting contest
(4 p.m.), the festival features
a parade (10 a.m.), vendor
booths, a car show and stage
entertainment. In its 35th
year, the festival kicks off
Saturday with a full break-
fast from 6:30-9:30 a.m. for
$5. Food can also be pur-
chased ala cart.
Individuals or groups
who haven’t signed up for
the parade can still register
Saturday morning beginning
at 8 a.m. The parade, which
starts downtown at 10 a.m.,
will wind its way to Irrigon
Marina Park where the fes-
tival takes place. Ribbons
will be awarded to winning
entries.
Event coordinator Char-
lene Cooley said lots of
donations have come in for
the raffle. People have a
chance to win everything
from a 50-inch TV (and other
items from the Wal-Mart
Distribution Center), a Til-

In addition, tickets for activ-

salutes Korean
War veterans
Outdoor fun is cranking
up this weekend with the
Arlington Show ’n’ Shine.
Registration begins Sat-
urday at 9 a.m. at Earl Snell
Park, located off Interstate
84, Exit 137. There is no fee
for spectators.
Vehicle entry is $10 per
car. The first 50 registered
will receive a dash plaque
and goodie bag. Nearly
two dozen trophies will be
awarded in a variety of cat-
egories at 3:15 p.m.
People
are
encour-
aged to enjoy a day in the
shade along the Columbia
River. The event also fea-
tures kids’ activities, a Hula
Hoop contest, a three-on-
three basketball tourna-
ment and the annual Rub-
ber Duck Regatta. Also,
the poker walk winner will
receive a $150 gift certif-
icate to have something
made by Ron Wilson Cus-
tom Leather.
In addition, toys for
water play are provided by
the Arlington Community
Chamber of Commerce. For
added safety, lifeguards will
be on duty in the lagoon
area.
Bring an appetite — St.
Francis Mission Catholic
Church will fire up the bar-
becue beginning at 11 a.m.
And strawberry shortcake
will be served throughout
the afternoon by the Meth-
odist Church Ladies.

The
Pendleton
Air
Museum is hosting a special
open house to coincide with
National Korean War Veter-
ans Armistice Day.
The free event is Satur-
day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
at 21 S.W. Emigrant Ave.,
Pendleton.
People
are
invited to stop by for con-
versation, coffee and cook-
ies with Korean War vet-
erans Ken Garrett, Tom
Tangney, Richard Allstott
and Paul Gadaire. In addi-
tion, museum visitors can
learn about the historic con-
nection between Pendleton
and World War II, read vin-
tage newspapers or view the
memorial to area veterans.

Pendleton
Air
Museum is a nonprofit orga-
nization. Volunteers of all
ages are invited to help
keep the local history alive.

off with movie
night
Movies in the Park
will feature a screening of
“Guardians of the Galaxy.”
The free event is Thurs-

chair and enjoy the 2014
action adventure flick.
