Umatilla announces
design contest
The city of Umatilla is seeking some
fresh concepts to help promote its parks
and recreation program.
A Tagline & Logo Design Compe-
tition is being held to solicit new and
modern ideas. People who reside, work
or attend school in Umatilla are eligi-
ble to submit up to three entries. Minors
must have parent/guardian permission to
participate.
The design will be used on such things
as official documents, websites, city flags,
official city pins, business cards, awards
and other ways. The submissions must be
positive and reflective of the community
and lifestyle of Umatilla. It should cap-
ture what Umatilla means to the creator.
The top three finalists will each receive
a cash prize. The winner will receive $50
and recognition during an upcoming city
council meeting.
Submit entry ideas to Umatilla City
Hall, 700 Sixth St. The contest ends June
30.

The Arc takes steps to
include others
An awareness event will help raise
money to support The Arc Umatilla
County’s Summer Recreation and Inclu-
sion Program.
The Intellectual Disability Awareness
Walk (1-mile) is Saturday, June 22 at 10
a.m at The Arc Building, 215 W. Orchard
Ave., Hermiston. On-site registration
begins at 9 a.m. or people can pre-regis-
ter at www.thearcumatilla.org. The regis-
tration fee is $20. Those unable to attend
can also make donations at the registra-
tion site.
A nonprofit organization, The Arc
advocates for individuals with intellec-
tual and developmental disabilities. To

Special Olympics
celebrates successes,
support
Special Olympic athletes, coaches,
volunteers and supporters had multi-
ple reasons to cheer recently as Hermis-
ton/Pendleton Local Program #510 cele-
brated during its annual awards event.

The local Special Olympics program
recently celebrated during its annual
awards event. Those receiving recognition
included Kristi Smalley (coach of the
year), Jennifer Cecil for the Hermiston
Noon Kiwanis Club (organization of the
year), Robert Lorgoria for The Knights
of Columbus Our Lady of Angels Council
(volunteers of the year), Arielle Shaver
(female athlete of the year) and Ben
Spinden (male athlete of the year).
April 23 gathering. Held at The Arc
Building in Hermiston, it featured an
ice cream social. Those recognized were
nominated based on exemplifying the
spirit of Special Olympics.
Male Athlete of the Year was pre-
sented to Ben Spinden by longtime bowl-
ing coach Doris Boatright. Female Ath-
lete of the Year was Arielle Shaver, who
received her award from bowling coach
Karrington Lucas. Coach of the Year rec-
ognized Kristi Smalley, who was pre-
sented the award by basketball and bocce
coach Jessica Sexton. Volunteer of the
Year was accepted by Robert Longoria
on behalf of The Knights of Columbus
Our Lady of Angels Council #3999. Spe-
cial Olympian Rian Middleton presented
the Organization of the Year award to
Jennifer Cecil on behalf of the Hermiston
Noon Kiwanis Club.
The local Special Olympics program
currently has approximately 90 athletes
participating in bocce, golf and athlet-
ics (track and field events). The athletic
training and competitions are offered to
individuals with intellectual and develop-
mental disabilities at no charge. For more

Recruitment
workshop offered in
Boardman
Morrow County employers are invited
to participate in a free workshop that
helps in connecting talented young pro-
fessionals to local businesses.
Employers will learn how to attract
and retain interns by working together
to develop a countywide marketing
and outreach plan. The program bene-
fits both businesses and those seeking
employment.
The “Oregon WORKS Community
Internship Workshop” is Thursday, June
6 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Port of Mor-
row Riverfront Center, 2 Marine Drive,
Boardman. Lunch is provided. While the
program is free, those planning to attend
need to register by Thursday, May 30 at
https://bit.ly/2I0BL2x.
The Port of Morrow was chosen as
one of four locations across the state to
host the workshop. It’s presented by the
McMinnville Economic Development
Partnership with grants from The Ford
Family Foundation and the Oregon Com-
munity Foundation.

Old Iron Show gears
up for 16th year
Owners of old iron engines, steam
engines, antique cars, vintage farm imple-
ments and other machinery from bygone
eras are encouraged to dust off the cob-
webs and consider displaying their equip-
ment during the Old Iron Show.
In its 16th year, there is no fee to dis-
play items. Also, demonstrations are
encouraged. The show is Friday, June 7
and Saturday, June 8 from 8 a.m. to dusk,
and Sunday, June 9 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
at Roy Raley Park, 1205 S.W. Court Ave.,
Pendleton. The event is free and open to
the public.

HHS class of ‘74 plans
reunion
Members of the Hermiston High
School class of 1974 are encouraged
to spread the word about the upcoming
45-year reunion.
The July 26-27 event will include a
Friday meet-and-greet at Maxwell Sid-
ing Event Center. Also, Saturday features
a potluck in the backyard of Bruce and
Molli Wilcox’s home.
As a fundraiser, the class is sell-
ing a DVD of past reunions. Payable in
advance, the cost is $20.

aims to stop the cycle
of child abuse, neglect
and poverty by intro-
ducing the physical and
emotional benefits of
sports, adventure activ-
ities, music and the arts
to vulnerable youth.
Ducks Race the
Rapids is Saturday,
June 1 from 11 a.m.
to 1 p.m. at Riverfront
Park, Orchard Exten-
sion Loop, Hermiston.
People are encouraged
to bring a picnic and
enjoy the event. Ducks
are available at par-
ticipating
businesses
for $5, while supplies
last. There is a limit of
2,000. Admission to the
park is free and tick-
ets for activities will be
sold by vendors with
a portion of proceeds
given to the cause.
The ducks will be
dropped in the river
at noon. The person
whose ticket matches
the numbered duck that
moves fastest down the
river to the finish line
and is scooped up first
wins $1,000. Five other
prizes will be given to
the next five ducks who
complete the race.

chased at Roger’s Toy-
ota, the Hermiston
Chamber of Commerce,
Hermiston Parks & Rec-
reation, Atkinson Staff-
ing, Columbia Bank,
O’Reillys, the city of
Umatilla, Smitty’s Ace
