T
he Hermiston boys like to keep their
audience in suspense.
The soccer team made its
Mid-Columbia Conference debut April 2 at
home against Hanford. The Falcons took an
early lead, but Hermiston came back to tie
it up just before halftime, and fi nally pulled
away for a 2-1 victory.
“We started off sloppy,” sophomore
midfi elder Alexis Leal said. “We came in
with big heads. I think we expected to send
it every time. We were playing long ball.”
Those expectations weren’t unjustifi ed
— the Falcons were without a single win
all the way through the preseason (0-6).
Meanwhile, the Bulldogs were going in
with a 1-4 overall record.
But the Falcons got off to a hot start when
freshman midfi elder Ethan Henning kicked
a goal in not 8 minutes into the game. They
would hold the 1-0 advantage for 24 min-
utes until Bulldog junior midfi elder Cole-
man Solano assisted sophomore forward
Moises Lopez for a goal to knot the score.
“We came out strong for those fi rst cou-
ple of minutes,” Hermiston coach Rich
Harshberger said, “but then we went back
on our heels. That’s how they (Hanford) got
their goal.”
With the score tied at 1-1 at the half,
Harshberger knew something had to
change.
“We came in thinking we would send
it. We weren’t playing our usual system,”
he said. “That was the main message at the
half — we don’t play long ball. That’s not
who we are. That’s not an option. The boys
really responded to that, and stepped it up
in the second half.”
At 18:39 in the second half, senior mid-
fi elder Emilio Leal drove the ball down
the fi eld, gearing up to put a goal in, but
soon found himself cornered by a Hanford
defender.
He eyed an opening and passed the ball
to Alexis Leal, who kicked in an easy goal
to push the Bulldogs out front.
“If we were going to win this game,
we couldn’t just hang our heads and give
in early,” Alexis Leal said. “We needed to
come back and start playing together, as a
team. That’s what made the difference for
us in that second half.”
Alexis Leal fi nished the night with three
shots off goal, and only one on. Senior
goalie Juan Navarrete recorded two saves.
“In the league, there are no easy games,”
Harshberger said. “We’re a solid team, but
we’re still improving game by game. We’re
starting to get that team chemistry back.”
HERMISTON 8, SOUTHRIDGE 0
— The Bulldogs started scoring goals just
three minutes into their home game Friday
against the Suns and never let up for their
second Mid-Columbia Conference victory
of the season.
“We were fi ring on all cylinders tonight,”
said coach Rich Harshberger. “Southridge
is rebuilding a little bit. It was a pretty one-
sided game.”
Josue Cadenas scored two goals for
Hermiston (3-4 overall, 2-0 MCC), and
Emilio Leal, Josh Galvez, Gerardo Sotelo,
Yovani Razon, and Moises Lopez each put
one in, as well. Matt Mendez put an own-
goal into play for Southridge to fi nish off
the scoring.
The Suns recorded just four shots-on-
goal for the night, but couldn’t get one in
past Hermiston’s goalkeepers.
Irrigon’s Ana Zacarias was a double
winner Friday at the Carnival of Speed in
Milton-Freewater.
Zacarias won the 200 in a time of 27.45,
then topped the fi eld in the 400 (1:03.64),
just a step ahead of Ione’s Hailey Heideman
(1:03.79).
The track meet, in its 84th year for the
boys, and 40th for the girls, did not see any
of its records broken.
Pendleton won the boys team title with
125.5 points, with Walla Walla a distant sec-
ond with 86 points. Heppner fi nished fi fth
(42) and Umatilla sixth (38).
Walla Walla won the girls team title with
109 points, with Ontario (64) second, Pend-
leton (62) third and Umatilla (46.5) fourth.
Umatilla’s Patty Burres was second in
the 100 (13.21) and the 200 (28.06), and ran
a leg on the 4x100 relay team that fi nished
third.
Pilot Rock freshman Emily Lambert fi n-
ished second in the shot put (31-11), while
Lexie Cox of Stanfi eld/Echo was second in
the javelin (105-3).
In the 800, Madelyn Nichols of Hep-
pner (2:31.98) fi nished second, then added
a third-place fi nish in the 1,500 with a per-
sonal best time of 5:17.05.
In the boys meet, Derek Howard of Hep-
pner took top honors in the shot put with a
mark of 47-5, and was fourth in the discus
(121-7).
Umatilla’s Zayne Troeger fi nished third
in the 800 (2:09.34), and ran a leg on the
winning 4x400 relay (3:48.17) along with
Cesar DeLaCruz, Julian Gutierrez and
Aarik Russell. Troeger also was sixth in the
3,000 (9:54.79).
In the 1,500, Heppner’s Trent Smith was
fourth (4:26.86), closely followed by Sisay
Hurty (4:27.31) of Stanfi eld/Echo.
