Hermiston man swallows meth, charged
with tampering with evidence
By HERMISTON HERALD
A Hermiston man was
charged with tampering
with physical evidence,
after he allegedly swal-
lowed 10 grams of pack-
aged methamphetamine to
avoid being caught with
drugs in his possession. He
was hospitalized.
According to Hermiston
Police Department, Mat-
thew Santiago Gilbert was
contacted by Hermiston
and Umatilla police related
to an alleged theft in Uma-
tilla. When they contacted
Gilbert, police learned that
he had two unrelated war-
rants for his arrest, both
for failure to appear in
court. He was arrested, at
which time he told officers
that he had swallowed the
drugs.
Officers called para-
medics, who took Gilbert
to Good Shepherd Medical
Center. Gilbert remained
in the hospital for about
36 hours, and was lodged
in the Umatilla County jail
upon his release on the war-
rants, and on a new charge
of Tampering with Physical
Evidence.

Several locations in
Umatilla and Morrow
counties have experienced
flooding this week that
started Saturday from fast
melting mountain snow.
Umatilla County emer-
gency manager Tom Rob-
erts said Monday afternoon
he surveyed the flooding at
Noble Road outside Herm-
iston. He said water from
Butter Creek appears to
have dumped into a nearby
canal.
“Right now, Noble
Road is closed for high
water,” he said.
Roberts said he didn’t
have an exact depth of the
water on the road, but it
was enough to reach the
grill on high-profile rigs.
“I’m not taking my
(Chevrolet)Trailblazer
across it, I’ll tell you that
much,” he said.
Westwinds Nursery at
29957 Noble Road is deal-
ing with the high water.
Owner Shelia Boettcher
said the rising water had
yet to level off. Roughly 3
feet of water covered the
business’ trees section, and
the closure of Noble Road
means accessing the busi-
ness from the east is off
limits. Westwinds remains
open, she said on Monday,

but folks have to come in
from with west at Inter-
state 84 exit 180 or West-
land Road.
“We’re hoping it will
reverse shortly and stop
flooding,” she said. “It’s
kind of weird to drive over
the freeway and see this
huge lake there.”
Roberts credited land
owners adjacent to Noble
Road with using tractors
and the like to build berms
to help stymie the water.
He urged locals living in
low areas and flood plains
to prepare ahead of time.
He said once the water
starts flowing in, there’s
little anyone can do to stop
it.
Willow Creek swamped
the rodeo arena at the Mor-
row County Fairgrounds,
Heppner, and the debris
in the creek’s high water
took out a footbridge at
the town’s golf course.
The Umatilla River also
flooded areas around
Pendleton.
The National Weather
Service predicted typical
off-and-on showers this
week with temperatures
in the 50s and lows in the
30s for lower elevations.
Higher elevations, such as
La Grande, will have highs
into the upper 40s and
lower 50s, but overnight
lows remaining above
freezing. The warmer
temperatures and drizzle
means the snow pack will
continue to run off and fill
local creeks and streams.

Fake card reader found at
truck stop near Hermiston
By HERMISTON HERALD
The Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office
alerted recent customers of the the Space
Age Travel Center near Hermiston to check
their accounts for suspicious activity after
the discovery of a fake credit/bank card
skimmer. Undersheriff Jim Littlefield said
so far no victims have come forward.
Store personnel on March 20 found the
phony card skimmer inside the store, the
sheriff’s office reported. The staff do not
know how long the fake device was there or
if it affected any customers.
The device consisted of a clear screen,
scanner and a duplicate keypad attached to
a card reader next to a register inside the
store.
“It looks authentic,” according to the
sheriff’s office. “On the inside of the device
are electronic components, including a bat-
tery and a device that reads the magnetic
strip on a credit/debit.”
And the keypad could capture pin
numbers.
Littlefield said there were no other fake
card readers at the Space Age, including on
the gas pumps, and no others businesses in
the county has reported the devices. Thieves
in the Tri-Cities used skimmers in Febru-
ary to rip off at least $100,000 from 215
accounts, according to the Tri-City Herald.
The sheriff’s office warned these theft
devices are becoming more sophisticated.
Customers need to examine devices for
signs of tampering or anything that looks
out of place before using it, such as a loose
card reader device or keypad, cracks, dents
or other damage, different colors on the
machine, and tape or glue.
The sheriff’s office also advised the use
of a credit card with a chip because those
are less likely to be skimmed.
For further information on how to spot
and avoid card skimmers, the sheriff’s
office referred to this article from PC Mag-
azine: http://bit.ly/2JvLBf6
