COMMUNITY A4 • HERMISTONHERALD.COM WEDNESDAy, FEbRuARy 20, 2019 Inland Musicians warm up with winter concert By TAMMY MALGESINI COMMUNITY EDITOR The Inland Northwest Musicians continue to tune up as they celebrate their 20th anniversary season. Featuring numer- ous Hermiston-area musi- cians, the Inland Northwest Orchestra will perform Sat- urday at 4 p.m. at the Sev- enth-day Adventist Church, 1401 S.W. Goodwin Place, Pendleton. There is no admission charge. Violinist Alice Massey is the featured soloist during a performance of “Concerto No. 1 for Violin and Orches- tra, Op 26” by Max Bruch. She began studying violin as an 8-year-old in Fort Worth, Texas. Earning a bachelor’s degree from Walla Walla University, Massey taught music in Walla Walla-area schools before moving to Pendleton and transition- ing to a career in human ser- vices. Working in the field for 31 years, Massey is the regional developmental dis- Staff photo by Tammy Malgesini Alice Massey of the Inland Northwest Musicians plays violin during a February 2017 rehearsal for a Hermiston High School music theater production. During the past 40 years, she has performed as a sec- tion string player with numerous regional sym- phonies. In 1999, Massey became a founding member of Inland Northwest Musi- cians. She previously served as concertmaster for the Walla Walla Symphony and Oregon East Symphony. The formal/semi-for- mal event is for girls of all ages and their fathers/father figures. With a theme of “Across the Universe,” the event is Saturday, May 18 at Eastern Oregon Trade and Event Center in Herm- iston. The goal of the ball is to strengthen daddy-daughter bonds. Before the music is cranked up and the food is spread out, organizers are seeking sponsors to assist with keeping costs down for participants. Sponsor con- tributions assist in covering expenses, such as site rental, decorations and catering. There are three levels of sponsorship that include con- tributor recognition at the event and on promotional materials. In addition, the sponsors at the top two lev- els include complimentary tickets for contributions that are made by Friday, March 8. Contributions are tax deductible. Admission includes a 5x7 portrait and corsage for each girl, a boutonniere for each father/father figure, refresh- ments and a chance to win door prizes. Tickets go on sale in mid-April at 60 Min- ute Photo, 1000 N. First St., Hermiston. They are expected to sell out. Playing a Josef Klotz violin made in 1795, Massey often performs in the orches- tra pit during Hermiston High School music theater productions. The concert program includes “The Hebrides Overture, Op 26,” aka “Fin- gal’s Cave,” and “Water Music Suite.” According to the Brit- ish Broadcasting Corpora- tion, Felix Mendelssohn was known for his love of travel- ing, which provided inspira- tion for his works. The Ger- man composer often wrote descriptive letters about his travels. “In order to make you understand how extraordi- narily the Hebrides affected me, the following came into my mind there,” he wrote in August 1829 regarding the composition. Salli Ketchersid, INWM publicity coordinator, said the piece is a standalone composition — “The Hebri- des” doesn’t precede a play or opera — a form common for the Romantic period. It has been described as a “tone-poem.” According to National Public Radio, George Frid- eric Handel was commis- sioned to write the “Water Music Suite.” Lagging at the polls in 1717, King George I of England’s political advi- sors encouraged him to throw a party. The piece’s concert premiere was staged on a barge on the River Thames. Under the direction of R. Lee Friese, INWM is committed to providing live musical performances to rural audiences. While there is no charge for per- formances, donations are appreciated. The 20th anniversary season crescendos with a reunion concert in June. The celebration will include a commissioned orchestral/ choral piece. For more infor- mation, contact inwm@ machmedia.net, 541-289- 4696 or visit www.inland- northwestmusicians.com.
