COMMUNITY A4 • HERMISTONHERALD.COM Cabin Fever for Kids opens doors to fun WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 2019 Columbia River Treaty flows with change By HERMISTON HERALD Photo contributed by Marvin Hamilton People associated with the Department of Human Services-Child Welfare and other community partners helped with DHS Cabin Fever for Kids. The Feb. 9 event provided indoor fun for area foster kids at the Hermiston Christian School. By TAMMY MALGESINI COMMUNITY EDITOR The inaugural DHS Cabin Fever for Kids event drifted in just in time, offer- ing a respite from being cooped up in the winter weather. Coordinated by the Department of Human Ser- vices-Child Welfare, the event was held Saturday at the Hermiston Chris- tian School. Marvin Ham- ilton, a DHS certifier, said despite the looming snow- storm, a total of 140 foster parents, children and volun- teers enjoyed the activities. The free event was a group effort, Hamilton said. Buttercreek Boys postpone February rehearsal The February rehearsal meeting of the Buttercreek Boys has been postponed. The group of seasoned musicians strum up old-time music the second Wednes- day of each month from 6-7:30 p.m. at Chuckwagon Cafe, 81027 Highway 395 North, Hermiston. There is no cover charge. However, due to inclement weather, this month’s event is on hold. The cafe will close at its regular time of 2 p.m. For more information, call the cafe at 541-567- 6329, or visit www.chuck- wagoncafe.net. The Arc reschedules dance With the recent winter conditions, The Arc Uma- tilla County postponed its annual valentine event. The Arc Valentine’s In addition to DHS staff, community partners, youth groups and foster parents helped in making Cabin Fever for Kids a success. Money for the event, Ham- ilton said, was provided by community partners, area businesses, donations and fundraisers, includ- ing a spring horse raffle for Brando, held this past summer. “We at DHS were very happy to have the support of the community and to either show up and put together a booth or sponsor an obsta- cle course,” Hamilton said. The day’s activities included a trio of booths manned by the OSU Exten- sion Office. They provided educational information about entomology and agri- culture. In addition, James “Snake Guy” McKnight and his 4-and-one-half-foot python were quite popu- lar. Staff from the Hermis- ton Goodwill store tossed in some extra fun with a bean bag toss activity. Also, the 2019 Umatilla County Fair court — Nive Ham- ilton, 15, Kyleigh Sepul- veda, 16, both of Hermis- ton, and Madison Pryor, 15, of Pendleton — wrangled in fun with Hidalgo, Bran- do’s bouncy spring horse brother. Other activities provided by DHS included a bouncy house and face paint- ing. Also, youth groups from Living Faith Church and The Country Church helped out. A 60-foot inflat- able obstacle course spon- sored by Tom Denchel Ford Country of Hermiston also was popular. The Department of Human Services plans on organizing additional activ- ities in the future for area foster children, as well as awareness and recruitment events.
