LOCAL A4 • HERMISTONHERALD.COM WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 2019 Local artist wrangles in talent Murphy’s artwork on display at Hermiston library By TAMMY MALGESINI COMMUNITY EDITOR A n interest in art was sparked at an early age for Andrea Mur- phy as she would gaze upon her mother’s (Linda Phil- lips) work adorning their Hermiston home. “She had some nice pen and ink horses on the walls that she had drawn, and she used to sketch these cute lit- tle horses for my sister and me,” Murphy said. “I think we drove her crazy asking for them.” Murphy went on to take drawing and painting classes at Hermiston High School, where she grad- uated in 2004. Later, she studied art at Blue Moun- tain Community College and Portland Community College. She describes her- self as a wife, mother of two boys and an ENFP — refer- ring to the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, it stands for Extroversion, Intuition, Feeling, and Perceiving. HEF seeks scholarship applicants The Hermiston Educa- tion Foundation will award eight scholarships of $2,500 each to 2019 Hermiston High School seniors. Important factors in the evaluation of applicants include academic scholar- ship, community service, leadership and financial need. The nonprofit organi- zation started its scholar- ship program in the spring of 2017. HEF also awards grants to district personnel for projects that enhance the educational experience of students. Poster contest seeks youth artists Oregon students in first through eighth grades are invited to design a poster that represents the importance of accep- tance and diversity in our neighborhoods. Sponsored by the Fair Housing Council of Ore- gon, the theme of the 21st annual poster contest is, “Everyone is Welcome in My Neighborhood.” The top entries will receive cash awards and the chance to showcase their artwork throughout Oregon. It is hum- bling and enriching every time.” Murphy especially enjoys the opportunity to meet the people who pur- chase her work — calling it “an unspoken connection.” Some of her work was recently on display at the Hamley Western Store in Pendleton. For the past six years or so, Murphy has been a part- time artist and stay-at-home mom to their sons, who are now 4 and 5 years old. However, she often can’t find enough time to devote to her artwork. “Sometimes I get tired from all the things that pull me in different directions,” she said.
