Pasco wrestlers overpower Hermiston
By ANNIE FOWLER
STAFF WRITER
Pasco’s veteran lineup
was more than Hermis-
ton could handle Thursday
night.
Pasco won all but three
matches en route to a 57-12
victory over the visiting
Bulldogs in Mid-Columbia
Conference action.
“Hermiston has a strong
team,” Pasco coach Jay
Covington said. “I know
they are young, but they had
a lot of grit and fi ght. The
score doesn’t say that, but it
was a good battle each time
on the mat.”
Hermiston’s Trevor Wag-
ner opened the match with
a 12-7 decision over Travis
Thorne at 160 pounds, but it
was all Pasco until the match
rolled around to 106 pounds.
“They are tough,” Herm-
iston coach Kyle Larson
said. “We have to under-
stand who we are wrestling,
but you can’t be happy with
57-12. We left guys home
tonight and we didn’t have
two guys in the middle, and
they could have been winna-
ble matches.”
At 106, Hermiston’s
Zayne Helfer posted a 5-2
decision over Jesus Manzo.
Helfer had the upper hand
the entire match until Manzo
got a reversal late in the third
round.
Adrian Delgado contin-
ued his successful season
with a pin of Andre Rodri-
guez at 113. Delgado led
11-1 in the second round
before pinning Rodriguez in
2:43.
“Delgado looked phe-
nomenal,” Larson said.
“Maybe one of his best
matches. He has been put-
ting in the extra time, and it
shows.”
At 120, Isaac Lambert
matched Pasco’s Ed Manzo
point for point to force
overtime.
Lambert got an escape
with 21 seconds left in regu-
lation to tie the score at 4-4,
but Manzo managed a take-
down 24 seconds into the
extra round for a 6-4 victory.
At 220, Hermiston’s Jon
Lee battled Damion Silva to
the bitter end. Tied at 4-4 in

Hermiston drops 3
duals to quality teams
Hermiston’s Jon Lee and
Trevor Wagner went 2-1
Saturday as the Bulldogs
battled three tough teams in
dual matches in Post Falls,
Idaho.
Hermiston
dropped
a 53-21 match to Orting
(Washington), getting wins
from Cole Abbott (126),
Wagner (160), Stanley Scott
(195), Dustyn Coughlin
(285), and Adrian Delgado,
who picked up a forfeit at
106.
The Cardinals have fi n-
ished second at the Wash-
ington 2A state tournament
the past three years.
Lee, Wagner, Hunter
Dyer (120), Jordan Frank-
lin (132) and Delgado all
had wins for the Bulldogs
against Lake Stevens, but
fell to the Vikings, 48-21.
Lake Stevens fi nished
fourth at the Washington 4A
state tournament last year.
Post Falls handed the
Bulldogs a 67-16 setback.
Hermiston registered wins
by Isaac Lambert (113),
Ethan Teel (152) and Lee
(220).
The Trojans have won
three of the past four Idaho
5A state team titles, includ-
ing 2018, and boast fi ve
returning state champions.
Playing college sports is
something Sophia Streeter
has wanted to do since she
was a child.
Thursday, the Hermis-
ton senior made that dream
come true when she signed
a letter of intent to play
volleyball at Columbia
Basin College in Pasco.
“It’s a nice feeling,”
Streeter said. “I feel pretty
lucky.”
In Streeter, the Hawks
are getting a 6-foot middle
blocker whose game is on
the rise.
“Her junior year, it was
more of a mental game
for her to buy in and trust
me,” Bulldogs coach Amy
Dyck said. “In September,
it clicked. She trusted her-
self, her team, and put it in
action to have success. I’m
excited to see her develop
her skills even more at
CBC.”
Streeter is the fi rst
Hermiston
volleyball
player to move on to the
next level in at least three
years, according to Dyck.
“I hope she values
what she got here,” Dyck
said. “That if you put in
the work, you can have
success.”
Hermiston,
which
moved into the highly
competitive
Mid-Co-
lumbia Conference this
season, struggled at the
beginning of the year, but
by the end fell one match
short of a trip to state after
losing to Southridge at
regionals.
Streeter, who fi nished
the season with 96 kills,
26 solo blocks and hit .200
over the course of 64 sets,

visited a couple of other
schools, but said she felt at
home at CBC.
“(Coach) Michael Jor-
dan and I just clicked,”
Streeter said. “Their motto
is ‘All in. Die Empty.’ The
culture there is nice. It’s
also close to home, my par-
ents like that.”
Streeter is hoping to
help the Hawks bring their
program back to life. Last
season, CBC fi nished 0-16
in East Region play, and
2-32 overall.
That Streeter is playing
college volleyball is kind
of a surprise.
“My fi rst two years of
high school, volleyball
was just something I did,”
said Streeter, who also
played basketball. “My
junior year, I wasn’t going
to play, but me and Coach
Amy sat down and talked.
I never had a coach care if
I played or not. I wouldn’t
be here if not for her.”
With Streeter moving
on to play college volley-
ball, Dyck said it paves a
path for others.
“I think it sets the stage
for the players coming
up,” Dyck said. “With hard
work, this can happen.”
