Hermiston takes two losses on the mat
By ANNIE FOWLER
Staff writer
Hermiston is starting to
realize just how tough the
Mid-Columbia Conference
is in wrestling.
Chiawana posted five
consecutive pins — from
Robby Vaughn at 145
pounds to Tyson Stover at
182 — to hand the Bulldogs
a 57-20 loss Thursday night
in Pasco.
“These duals mean some-
thing,” Hermiston coach
Kyle Larson said. “We are
going to improve and try to
get our guys to wrestle their
best. As much as we want
to win every match, we are
going to take it back across
the river and see if we can’t
get better.”
For Riverhawks coach
Jack Anderson, the match
was a milestone in his
career.
“This is my first win
against Hermiston in 18
years of coaching at Pasco
and here,” Anderson said.
“It was rally exciting. Herm-
iston has a good team. We
didn’t do a bad job, but we
have to be better next week
against Kamiakin.”
The match started at 195,
where Chiawana freshman
Isaiah Anderson, in his first
MCC dual, pinned Stanley
Scott in 27 seconds.
Jonathan Lee got the
Bulldogs on the board with
a 12-1 major decision over
Ceyetano Talavera at 220.
In the battle of the big
men, Chiawana’s Colby
Blasdel got Hermiston’s
Dustyn Coughlin in a bear
hug, took him down to his
back, and notched the pin in
1:30 to give the Riverhawks
a 12-4 lead.
The Bulldogs won the
next three matches, getting a
pin from Zane Helfer at 106,
a 10-0 major decision from
Adrian Delgado at 113, and
a pin from Isaac Lambert
at 120 to give Hermiston a
20-12 lead.
It was all Chiawana from
there, though Trevor Wag-
ner was on the cusp of beat-
ing the Riverhawks’ Riley
Cissne at 160.
Wagner held a 3-2 lead
after the first round,, and 5-4
after two. In the third, Cis-
sne got a reversal to take a
6-5 lead, and Wagner tied it
up with an escape.
Cissne took Wagner
down with 31 seconds left
in the third to go up 8-6,
but Wagner maneuvered a
reversal with 18 seconds
left on the clock to tie the
match at 8-8. In the waning
seconds, Cissne rolled over
Wagner and had his back
on Wagner’s stomach and
earned the pin at 5:55.
Hermiston vs. Post Falls
Hermiston coach Kyle
Larson knows his team
will take its lumps against
the likes of Idaho wrestling
power Post Falls, and he
wouldn’t have it any other
way.
The Trojans registered
pins in 12 matches en route
to a 76-9 victory Friday
night over the Bulldogs at
the Dawg House.
“We knew what we were
getting into,” Larson said of
scheduling Post Falls. “We
want our guys to know what
a tough guys feels like and
how they wrestle.”
The Trojans featured five
state champions in their
lineup — Roddy Romero
(98 pounds), Isaac Jessen
(126), AJ Delarosa (138),
Ridge Lovett (145) and
Tyler Morris (160). All won
by pin.
After Romero and Brax-
ton Mason (106) each won
their matches by pin, Herm-
iston’s Adrian Delgado got
the Bulldogs on the board
with a 4-2 victory over Bre-
lane Huber at 113.
Post Falls would run the
table from there until 220

pounds, where Hermiston’s
Jon Lee stopped a run of
seven consecutive pins with
a pin of his own.
Lee got a quick take-
down to start the match,
then recorded two near
fall points for a 4-0 lead
less than 15 seconds into
the first round. Post Falls’
Kaden Noesen maneuvered
a reversal, but once Lee was
free, he quickly took down
Noesen and pinned him at
the 45-second mark.
“Everyone was losing,”
Lee said. “I thought I had to
be the one to get something.
He was a good kid. I like
to get a feel for them and
gauge their strength. I used
a throw that Gage Ship-
ley showed me before the
match. It worked.”

Hermiston is going to
have to clean up its game if
it wants to have success in
the Mid-Columbia Confer-
ence this season.
The Bulldogs turned the
ball over 21 times, and Ken-
newick was there to pounce
on the opportunities en route
to a 51-38 victory Saturday
in the conference opener for
both teams at the Lions Den.
“That’s theme of our sea-
son so far,” Hermiston coach
Juan Rodriguez said of his
team’s poor decisions on the
court. “We are playing with
a young group that makes
passes at inopportune times.
Their immaturity showed
tonight against a good Ken-
newick team.”
The Lions, who only
trailed 1-0 early in the game,
led 29-18 at the half, but
had their lead cut to 35-30
at the end of the third quar-
ter as the Bulldogs scored
12 points, including a late
3-pointer by Kaylee Young.
The Lions (2-1, 1-0
MCC) got 18 points from
MeiLani McBee — seven in
the fourth quarter — as the
Lions went on a 16-8 run to
finish the game.
“We started the second
half slow and they came
back on us,” Kennewick
coach Darin Santo said.
“We found a way to win. I
thought we didn’t play pour
best game, but I was really
proud of them.”
The Bulldogs went almost
five minutes without scoring
a point in the fourth quarter.

couple of free throws to end

had already been done.
“We need to figure it out
sooner than later,” Rodri-
guez said. “We need to play

the game.”

the win, Hermiston coach
Juan Rodriguez was not
pleased with how his team
played.
“It’s one of those things
where I feel like it is a loss,”
he said. “Winning it like that
doesn’t feel right. We are
taking shots we don’t prac-
tice, ad-libbing and not run-
ning our offense.”

Hermiston got out to an
early lead once again, but
this time the Bulldogs were
able to hold on for their first
victory of the season.
Jazlyn Romero had 14
points, and Jayden Ray
added 13 as Hermiston
picked up a 47-35 nonleague
victory Dec. 4 over La

Hermiston opened the
game with a 3-pointer by
Romero, and the Tigers kept
it close most of the quar-
ter, pulling within 12-9 with
1:15 remaining in the first
quarter.
The Bulldogs would
scored the last seven points
of the quarter — including a
3-point play by Paige Palz-
inski — to take a 19-9 lead.
La Grande (0-1) out-
scored Hermiston 7-6 in
the second quarter, but still
trailed 25-16 at the half. The
Bulldogs had a 3 1/2-minute
scoring drought in the sec-
ond, which ended with Ray
scoring with 1:35 to play in
the first half.
The Tigers refused to
go away to start the third
as Camryn Collman scored
back-to-back baskets to pull
her team within 25-20 with
5:59 left in the third.
La Grande would not
score another point the rest
of the quarter, while the
Bulldogs scored 10 unan-
swered points, including a
3-point play by Romero, and
buckets by Mati Byrd and
Ray the final 35 seconds of
the quarter.
Ella Dunlap scored all
seven of her points in the
fourth quarter for the Tigers.
But they could not catch
the Bulldogs, who got four
points each from Romero,
Byrd and Ray in the fourth
to help seal the win.
