Kathy L. Grissom, 76, of Hermiston died Sunday, Nov. 4,
2018, at her home. She was born July 11, 1942, in Kokomo,

Ruth M. Engum of
Echo, Oregon, was born on
August 2, 1926, in Boise,
Idaho, to parents Preston
and Bessie Fosdick Carter.
She died at the age
of 92 on October 29,
2018, in Pendleton.
Ruth was raised
and attended schools
in Pinehurst, Idaho,
graduating
from
Kellogg
(Idaho)
High School in Engum
1943. After serv-
ing with the federal gov-
ernment in Washington,
D.C., during WWII, Ruth
returned to Spokane and
attended Holy Names
College, where she met
her husband, James John
Engum, who was attending
Gonzaga. They were mar-
ried June 5, 1948, in Kel-
logg, Idaho. They lived
in several Northwest cit-
ies before moving to Echo,
Oregon, in the late ’80s,
where she has lived since.
She worked for the
Department of the Army at
the Umatilla Army Depot
in 1965, and retired in 1987.
She received many awards
for superior performance
and was noted to have
“exhibited outstanding ver-
satility in a wide range of
positions.” Upon her retire-
ment they hoped to sail
around the world in a sail-
boat they were building.
They launched their 38-foot
ketch and sailed to the Port
of Victoria, living aboard for
several months in the Puget
Sound before returning to
McNary Marina due to her
husband’s health issues.
Ruth was a lifelong
learner, taking many

He died on October
27, 2018, at his home
in Echo, Oregon, at
the age of 85 years.
Kaye was raised
in Pendleton and
then Echo, Oregon, McAtee
where he attended
school and gradu-
ated in the class of
1950. He served in
the United States
Army and was sta-
tioned in Alaska until his
honorable discharge when
he returned to Echo, Oregon.
Kaye attended Oregon
State for a year before trans-
ferring to Oregon Tech,
where he earned his bache-
lor of science in agriculture.
He was united in marriage
to Jessie Boyer on June 18,
1959, in Pasco, Washington.
They leased and operated a
farm outside of Echo, Ore-
gon, and helped other area
farmers with custom har-
vesting for many years until
he went to work for Glenn
Rohde’s farm, where he was
still working at the time of
his death.
He enjoyed fishing,
sports, working and visit-
ing with family and friends.
Kaye was involved in many
community organizations,
including serving on the
Echo School Board for over
25 years, Echo Fire Dept.
Board, Echo Cemetery
Board, Little League presi-
dent and coach. He received
the Conservationist of the
Year award in 1972 for his
hunting, camping, and
traveling to Yuma, Ari-
zona, to snowbird for
several years. She loved
spending time with her
family and was a
wonderful mom.
She is survived
by her daughters
Sharon
Earhart,
Forest Grove, Ore.,
and Debra Gard-
ner, Weston, Ore.;
adopted
children
Lucky and Joan
Myrick; sister-in-law Mar-
ilyn Hiatt, Ontario, Ore.;
grandchildren Denise and
Donald; special friend and
caregiver Melinda Earll;
and numerous nieces and
nephews.
Nellie was preceded
in death by her husbands,
Warren Rust and Clyde
Berry, her parents, and sib-
lings Bob, Myrtle, Pearl,
Lee and Mary.
A private burial will be
at the Hermiston Ceme-
tery, Hermiston, Oregon.

temala. She was a
skilled seamstress,
knitter and quilter,
studied oil paint-
ing, pit-fired pottery,
wrote short stories
and was a master
HAM radio opera-
tor. She loved cook-
ing, canning and making
fudge and other candies
for her family and friends.
Ruth always had several
dogs, and generally a cat
or two.
She was an active
member of Our Lady of
Angels Catholic Church in
Hermiston.
Her children survive
her: Joseph (Karin Power)
Pendleton, Ore.; Carter
(Bonita, “Bonnie”), Stan-
field, Ore.; Michael (Van-
couver, Wash.) and Dor-
othy “Dori” Engum of
Hermiston. She had nine
grandchildren and many
great-grandchildren. Her
husband, parents and sib-
lings preceded her in death.
Recitation of the Holy
Rosary was held Saturday,
November 3, 2018, at 2 p.m.
at Our Lady of Angels Cath-
olic Church, 565 W. Herm-
iston Ave., Hermiston, Ore.,
followed by Mass of Chris-
tian Burial. Burial followed
at Pleasant View Cemetery,
Stanfield, Oregon.

Larry Eugene Ross, age
77, of Hermiston, Oregon,
passed away on Saturday,
November 3, 2018,
surrounded by his lov-
ing family and friends
at Kadlec Regional
Medical Center. He
was born on Octo-
ber 5, 1941, in Inde-
pendence, Kansas, to
Fred and Ruth Ross. Ross
He graduated
from
Albuquer-
que High School
in 1959. Imme-
diately following
high school gradu-
ation he joined the Navy. He
served 21 years and retired in
1980 as a senior chief.
In 1961, while on shore
leave in Reno, he met Jan
Herrick. They were mar-
ried on December 29, 1962.
While in the Navy they lived
in many different locations.
After Larry retired from the
Navy they made their home
in Hermiston, Oregon, and
have lived there for 38 years.
Larry loved the Lord, his
family, and friends deeply.
He loved sharing a cup of
coffee and stories with his
buddies a couple times a
week. He was involved in
many organizations over
the years and was a scout-
master for 25 years. He was
awarded the Silver Beaver
Award by the Boy Scouts of
America Council to honor
the impact he made in the
lives of the scouts.
His scouts are grown men
