HERMISTON HERALD

Kamiakin quarterback Lucas Castilleja rushes the ball in the Braves 34-27 win against Hermiston on Friday in Hermiston.
FOOTBALL

James pass was picked off, and Kami-
akin drove to the 4-yard line. Hermis-
ton held them up on three plays, but on
fourth down quarterback Lucas Cas-
tilleja found Niko Wiltz in the back of
the end zone to give Kamiakin a 20-12
lead which it took into the half as rain
began to fall.
Hermiston tied the game 20-20 in
the third quarter on an Andrew James
keeper, and he added a 2-point conver-
sion on the ground.
Altahir scored on a 63-yard run to
put Kamiakin back on top, and scored
again with 2:47 left to extend that lead.
A pivotal play happened between
the scores when a Kamiakin punt hit
a member of Hermiston’s return team
in the back, giving the ball right back
to the Braves. Despite the bad bounce
and back-to-back scores, Hermiston
fought back hard.
“I’m proud of our guys for bounc-
ing back,” James said. “We could have
quit. It would have been the easiest
thing to quit right there, but we came
back and made it a game. That makes
me happy.”
A screen pass to Wyatt Noland was
the capper on the next drive and put
Hermiston within reach at 34-27, and
the defense forced a punt to keep the
game interesting.
“Football is like life,” Faeteete
told his team after the game. “Just as
everything is going great, it punches
you in the face. The lessons we learn
from football is an opportunity to end
the season right. It’s not the end of the
road.”
Hermiston will play in a district
crossover game next weekend to end
its first season in the Washington con-
ference. James, while disappointed
to miss the playoffs in his senior sea-
son, said he felt good about the first
campaign.
“We showed we could do in Herm-
iston and we set the stage for all the
classes coming up,” he said.

Irrigon’s final league
game was its first league
win on Thursday night.
And it might earn the
team a spot in the playoffs.
The Knights honored
their seniors and defeated
Umatilla in a nail-biting
30-28 victory at home to
close the Special District 3
schedule.
Payton Smith scored the
first touchdown for Irrigon
with a 33-yard run with
7:09 on the clock.
Umatilla made sure Irri-
gon lived up to the “Fightin’
Knights” nickname, going
touchdown for touchdown
through the game. Quar-
terback Andrew Earl and
running back Trent Durfey
proved to be the Vikings’
secret weapon and quickly
responded by putting their
team ahead 8-6 with a
touchdown from Earl and
a 2-point conversion from
Durfey. But the first quar-
ter was the only one to fin-
ish in the Vikings’ favor.
“Umatilla was ready
for us,” Irrigon head coach
Ken Thompson said.
“They came out and ran
that power formation, and
DENTAL Itsuratce
took it to us the whole
night.”
Irrigon opened the sec-
ond quarter by reclaim-
ing the lead — a pass from
Keith Fleming to Lino
Covarrubia for 60 yards
and a touchdown. Wide
receiver Ruben Moreno
scored on the conversion
to give the Knights a 14-8
lead.
The Vikings tied it up
soon after when Durfey
ran it into the end zone for
a 14-14 tie.
Smith scored on the
Knights’ next possession,
and Durfey scored a touch-
down and a 2-point con-
version for the Vikings to
end the half at a 22-22 tie.
Irrigon put its final eight
points on the scoreboard
in the third quarter with a
17-yard pass from Ryan
Hussey to Fleming in the
end zone, topped off with a
2-point conversion scored
off a pass from Fleming
to wide receiver Caleb
Adams.
The fourth quarter
almost saw a Umatilla
comeback after Earl com-
pleted an 8-yard pass to
Durfey in the end zone
for another Vikings touch-
down, but Irrigon’s defen-
sive line stopped the
2-point conversion to give
the Knights the victory.
“We started out slow,
but came together in the
second half and just kept
rolling,” Fleming said after
the win. “We fought hard
till the end.”
