Chiawana had just one
serve receive error last week
during their Oct. 2 game.
That and a few other things
spelled doom for Hermiston
in its Mid-Columbia Confer-
ence home match with the
Riverhawks.
McKenna Kaelber handed
out 26 assists and Mareesa
Hill had seven kills as the
Riverhawks cruised to a
25-16, 25-6, 25-6 victory
over the Bulldogs (2-6).
“We never showed up,”
Dyck said. “I don’t know
what the distraction was.
We can have the greatest
warm-up in the world, and as
soon as the whistle blows we
don’t have it. One day it will
click and they will believe in
themselves. They have the
talent and the heart.”
Kylie Thorn, who had six
kills and three aces, reeled
off eight consecutive points
in the first set as Chiawana
jumped out to a 12-2 lead.
Hermiston’s Hamilton put
three points on the board to
pull her team within 15-7,
and Kendall Dowdy added
three more points to make
it 17-10. The teams traded
points to the end.
Kaelber and Hill com-
bined for 10 points as the
Riverhawks went out front
11-1 in the second set. The
Bulldogs would not get closer
than 10 points.
The third set was more
of the same. Marissa Logo-
zzo served seven consecu-
tive points for a 7-1 lead, then
Thorne reeled off eight more
for a 17-1 lead.
With Chiawana leading
19-5, the Bulldogs commit-
ted four unforced errors as
the Riverhawks put the match
away.
“Against a team this good,
we can’t send over a bunch
of free balls,” Dyck said.
“They take a free ball and
say, ‘Thank you very much.’”
Dowdy led the Bulldogs
with 11 digs and 10 assists,
while Courtnee West had 18
assists, Reagan three kills
and six digs, Avery Treadwell
four kills, and Daisy Maddox
three kills.
The win was No. 501 for
Chiawana coach Jim Steach,
whose team is 7-0 in the
MCC.
“We have six seniors who
have been around awhile,” he
said. “They know the game
really well. Defensively, our
movement was much better.
It’s these kind of things we
are working on getting bet-
ter at.”
Yaneli Garcia added five
kills, and Logozzo 13 digs for
the Riverhawks.
The Hermiston Bulldogs
were short-handed Thursday
night for their Mid-Colum-
bia Conference match against
Pasco, but once they got into
a rhythm, their game came
together.
After dropping the first set,
Hermiston (3-6) rallied for a
20-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-19
road win over Pasco (0-8).
“When you have two mid-
dles and one (Haylee Ham-
ilton) goes down, you have
to be resourceful,” Hermis-
ton coach Amy Dyck said. “A
lot of it was hit-or-miss. We
had half a practice with a new
rotation.”
Scout Reagan, a 5-foot-6
senior, moved to the mid-
dle to replace Hamilton. She
led Hermiston with 11 kills,
while adding three blocks and
six digs.
“She played middle last
year, so this wasn’t new to
her,” Dyck said. “She is a
true athlete. It was fun to see
her get up and get her rhythm
back,
When Pasco won the first
set, it was just the second it
had won this year. Coach
Julie Estes said the small vic-
tories lead to bigger things.
“They are improving every
game,” Estes said. “They are
starting to trust themselves
and their teammates, and
believing they can win.”
Pasco rallied from a 6-2
deficit in the first set, and
finally took the lead for good
at 13-12. The Bulldogs led
by as many as seven points
before securing the win.
“Every night in this league
is tough,” Dyck said. “I’m
proud we went three straight
to win the match. We are pre-
pared to fight every night.”
It was Pasco that had the
early lead in the second set,
but Hermiston tied the set at
10-10, then put a little dis-
tance between the teams with
solid service runs by Emma
Combes and Halee Stubbs.
Reagan served set point.
Hermiston jumped out to
a 14-3 lead in the third set,
only to see Pasco pull within
23-21 late in the set. Ireland
McDonough served for the
win.
In the final set, the teams
were tied at 11-11 before
Combes reeled off seven con-
secutive points for a 19-11
lead. Pasco would fight back
to make it 23-19, but would
get no closer.
McDonough added eight
kills and nine digs for Herm-
iston, while Sophia Streeter

Chiawana overpowers Hermiston
Bulldogs prepare to
face Eisenhower Friday
Football • Vongphachanh
leads way on both sides
The Hermiston Bulldogs are licking their
wounds after a 34-10 loss to Chiawana last
week, but Friday is a new day.
Hermiston (4-2) will host Eisenhower
(Yakima) in a nonleague game at Kennison
Field.
Eisenhower has won two games in a row,
coming into the game off a 20-13 win over
Moses Lake.
“It’s homecoming, anything can happen,”
Hermiston quarterback Andrew James said.
The game will feature the top running
back in the Mid-Columbia Conference in
Hermiston’s Wyatt Noland, and the top
back in the Big Nine Conference in Damien
Pacheco.
Noland has run for 924 yards and 13
touchdowns, while Pacheco has 845 yards
and nine touchdowns for the Cadets (3-3
overall, 1-2 Big Nine).
Noland, a 6-foot-1, 195-pound senior,
was held to 82 yards last week, but he is
healthy going into Friday night, and said he
is ready to get back to work.
A 5-7, 155-pound senior, Pacheco ran for
300 yards and five touchdowns in Eisen-
hower’s 42-28 win over Stadium in their
season opener. Since then, he has been aver-
aging 109 yards per game.
Defensively, the Cadets allow 349 yards
and 23.6 points per game.

The Hermiston Bulldogs were concerned
about Chiawana’s defense and AJ Vong-
phachanh going into Friday’s Mid-Columbia
Conference showdown.
They were right to be worried.
Vongphachanh finished with a hand-
ful tackles and a quarterback sack, a fum-
ble recovery and a 5-yard interception for a
touchdown. Oh, and he also ran the ball for
a 2-point conversion as the Riverhawks got
back on the winning track with a 34-10 vic-
tory over the Bulldogs at Edgar Brown Sta-
dium in Pasco.
“Too many mistakes,” Hermiston coach
David Faaeteete said. “We turned the ball
over twice on special teams and got down
21-7. Hats off to Chiawana, they played a
good game and they beat us soundly.”
The Riverhawks (4-1) avoided losing
three games in a row with the win, and caused
even more of a logjam in the standings.
“The defense played really well up front,”
Chiawana coach Steve Graff said. “When we
had chances on offense, we got points. Some
of the young kids are growing up and making
better decisions, and that helps.”
Hermiston (4-2) wasted no time in find-
ing the end zone first Friday night, as Wyatt
Noland bulled his way over the goal line from
1 yard out just 3:54 into the game. Noland
finished with 82 yards rushing.
Chiawana punted on its first possession,
then forced Hermiston to do the same. A
poor snap to punter Juan Carlos Navarrete
resulted in a fumble that was recovered by
Vongphachanh at the Bulldogs’ 22.
One play later, Preston Vine connected
with Kobe Young for a 22-yard touchdown.
The PAT failed, giving Hermiston a 7-6 lead.
In the second quarter, the Riverhawks
scored two touchdowns in a span of 14
seconds.
After Vongphachanh returned an Andrew
James interception for a touchdown, and
converted the 2-point conversion for a 14-7
lead. Chiawana forced a fumble on the ensu-
ing kickoff and returned the ball to the Herm-
iston 1-yard line.
Vine plunged over the goal line for the
touchdown and a 21-7 lead.
“That helped,” Graff said of the two quick
scores. “We’ve had that done to us. I know
what that feels like.”
Navarrete kicked a 25-yard field goal with
40 seconds remaining in the first half to pull
the Bulldogs within 21-10.
The Riverhawks would score twice in
the second half, while holding the Bulldogs
scoreless.
“I thought the kids battled hard,” Faae-
teete said. “A lot of the kids don’t have the
experience playing in big games like this.”
James threw for 127 yards — 55 of them
going to Jordan Ramirez. Ryan Arnold fin-
ished with nine tackles, while Cash Camp-
bell and Cody Thacker had quarterback
sacks, and Broc Remmer an interception.
