Hermiston finishes strong at Oregon City

The Hermiston cross
country team traveled to the
Oregon City Invitational
on Saturday, with both the
boys and girls varsity teams
placing seventh overall.
Senior Freddy Mendoza
led the boys, finishing with
a 17:11 time and placing
19th in his second meet. A
number of other Hermiston
varsity runners performed
well, including Greg Ander-
son (17:15), Freddy Ibarra
(17:41), Simon Headings
(17:55), and Adrian Del-
gado (18:21). Freshmen
Jackson Shaver and Carson
Bradshaw finished in 18:32
and 18:55, respectively,
during the junior varsity
race.
Freshman Cydney San-
chez lead the girls’ var-
sity team with a 21:09 fin-
ish, placing 26th. Fatima

The Hermiston Bulldogs
were pulled back to earth
Friday night by the Kenne-
wick Lions.
After winning their first
two Mid-Columbia Confer-
ence games, the Bulldogs
dropped a 26-25 game to
the Lions. A chance to win
the game late was foiled as
a bad snap on a 38-yard field
goal attempt by Juan Carlos
Navarrete with 50.2 seconds
left on the clock gave Ken-
newick its first win of the
season.
“That’s part of football,”
Hermiston coach David
Faaeteete said. “We didn’t
do a good job of bouncing
back after a big win over
Richland last week. Kenne-
wick is a good football team
and they came to play.”
The Lions, who blocked
two PATs, recorded a safety,
and ran a fake punt for a
touchdown, scored with
4:13 left in the fourth quar-
ter to take a 26-25 lead.
“We needed every play
today,” Kennewick coach
Bill Templeton said. “We
just beat a good football
team. I couldn’t be more
proud of our boys.”
Kennewick
freshman
Myles Mayovsky, who ran
for 169 yards on the night,
scored the final touchdown,
and Ethan Woolery put the
PAT though the uprights for
the one-point lead.
“He has been the man
since he was 5 years
old,” Templeton said of
Mayovsky.
Trailing 13-10 at the half,
the Lions turned a fourth-
and-6 at the Hermiston
48 into a fake punt. Talon
LaFontaine connected with
The Bulldogs went for two,
but the pass failed.
“That’s the way football
goes,” Faaeteete said. “Our
kids will be hungry next
week (at Walla Walla). We
will learn from our loss and
poor execution. This is just a
bump in the road.”
The Bulldogs took a
13-10 lead at the half with
both teams getting big yard-
age out of their backs.
Hermiston’s Noland ran
for 84 yards on 10 carries
and helped set up the Bull-
dogs’ first touchdown, a
21-yard pass from James to
Jordan Ramirez 3 1/2 min-
utes into the game.
Mayovsky, who had 94
yards in the first half, had
two runs of 14 yards on
Kennewick’s first drive that
put the Lions in the red zone.
JJ Rodriguez ran the ball
in from 10 yards out for a
7-7game with 4:37 left in
the first.
Hermiston prepares
for stingy Walla
Walla defense
The Hermiston Bulldogs are
in for a big battle Friday night
when they go up against Walla
Walla in a Mid-Columbia Con-
ference showdown at Borleske
Stadium.
The Blue Devils (1-2) are
anchored on the line by 6-foot-7,
280-pound tackle Patrick Utsch-
inski, who last week verbally
committed to Washington State.
Walla Walla gives up just 258
yards of offense per game, but
have struggled in the points
allowed department, giving up
29.3 per game. The Blue Dev-
ils do have a pair of intercep-
tions by all-state hurdler Jared
McAlvey.
On the flip side, Hermis-
ton averages a league-best 432
yards per game, with running
back Wyatt Noland rolling up an
average of 173 yards per game.
Defensively, the Bulldogs
(2-1) give up a paltry 15.2 points
per game, and Zane Davis has
two interceptions on the young
season.
