County OKs stop sign for Westland intersection
New data centers
changing traffic on
Westland Road
HERMISTON HERALD
Get ready to hit the brakes
at the intersection of North-
west Livestock and West-
land roads near Hermiston.
Umatilla County Board of
Commissioners approved
a stop sign for Livestock
where it meets Westland.
Umatilla County Pub-
lic Works Director Tom Fel-
lows told the board at its
regular public meeting on
July 18 in Pendleton the
intersection needs the sign
due to changes in traffic.
Fellows also said the sign is
part of the deal with Ama-
zon’s Vadata Inc. to improve
the intersection. The com-
pany has projects under con-
struction there.
The board voted 3-0 for
the sign.
The board also approved
a deal for the county road
department to provide labor
and equipment for some
road work for the Confeder-
ated Tribes of the Umatilla
Indian Reservation.
The tribes asked if the
county could chip seal Short
Mile Road and lay down an
oil mat on Southeast 56th
Street and Gopher Flats
Lane.
Fellows said the tribes
will provide all the material
and reimburse the county for
its labor and equipment.
And the board also voted
3-0 for a deal to provide
the city of Athena with five
hours of code enforcement
a week at a cost of $35 an
hour.
County Planning Director
Bob Waldher told commis-
sioners the deal would allow
the county to hire another
code enforcement employee
for two full days a week to
cover Athena for five hours
plus some of Pendleton and
Milton-Freewater.
The county has a similar
deal with Adams, and Com-
missioner George Murdock
asked if Weston might fol-
low suit.
Code enforcement coor-
dinator Gina Miller said
Weston could go that route.
