HERMISTON HISTORY
KARA HAYDEN
Speech Language Pathologist
Keith Ellis paints the face of Brent Driscoll during Hermiston’s Spudfest in June 1993.
When and why did you move to Hermiston?
I moved to Hermiston in late June 2017 to work as a
speech-language pathologist at Good Shepherd.
What is your favorite place to eat in Hermiston?
My favorite places to eat in Hermiston are at my
friends’ houses. They make really good food.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
Riding bikes, hiking, skiing, quilting, road trips, read-
ing, swimming. ... basically any kind of adventure.
What surprises you about Hermiston?
It looks like there’s nothing to do here, but there’s a
TON to do here.
What was the last book you read?
“I Left My Voice on the Dining Room Table” by Pat
Wertz Sanders
What app or website do you use most often
other than Facbook or Google?
Instagram
If you could travel anywhere, where would you
go?
Asia and/or New Zealand
What is the funniest thing that’s happened to
you?
About five years ago a bird pooped on my head
during an OK Cupid date, and my date never even
noticed. I was just relieved my hair was so long that
my one nice shirt didn’t get ruined.
What is one of your goals for the next 12
months?
To go on a gravel bike adventure and backpack in the
Wallowas
What is your proudest accomplishment?
Deciding to uproot my entire life and move some-
where else just because, well, why not?

A Hermiston man plead
guilty last week with the
stipulation that he was
“insane” when he shot a
Hermiston Police officer
last September. Because of
the insanity plea, Timothy
Johnson will not be serv-
ing time in prison, but will
be spending the next 20
years under the supervi-
sion of the state Psychiat-
ric Security Review Board.
The sentence comes after
Johnson was charged with
first-degree assault and
attempted aggravated mur-
der stemming from a series
of incidents on Sept. 9,
1992. According to police
records, Johnson fired
repeated rounds into the
air near his home. Officers
were called to the scene
and one of those bullets
pierced the window of a
police car housing Officer
Jim Littlefield. Littlefield
was shot in the shoulder
and taken to the hospi-
tal. He recovered from the
wound. While Johnson
may spend the entire two
decades in a mental insti-
tution, he could be released
at any time the psychi-
atric review board finds
him sane and no threat to
society.

The June 13 article “Council unpacks property rule issues” misquoted
Rhonda Sallee. She asked whether proposed rules for shipping containers
would apply to those already in place.
The June 13 “By the Way” stated that Orchard Avenue would be “blocked
off” for construction on July 8-10. Assistant city manager Mark Morgan
clarified that one lane will be kept open during construction.

telephone
growth, which moved in
1968 to all-time highs, will
bring adjustments in basic
monthly phone charges
for Hermiston customers,
according to D. Slusher,
Pacific Northwest Bell
manager. Monthly resi-
dence rates for Hermiston
customers will go up 10
to 30 cents, while monthly
business service charges
will increase from 20 cents
to $1.50, depending on
the type of service. The
last revision in Hermis-
ton phone rates occurred in
January, 1957. Currently,
more than 2,800 customers
are served by Pacific North-
west Bell in the Herm-
iston exchange, Slusher
said. Calls from phones in
Hermiston can be dialed
directly without long dis-
tance charges to more
than 4,100 phone users in
Hermiston, Echo, Stan-
field and Umatilla. Slusher
pointed out that five years
ago, Hermiston phone cus-
tomers totaled only 2,390,
and that extended ser-
vice was limited to a total

Pranksters, with a very
crude idea of a practi-
cal joke, have “had them-
selves a time” in recent
weeks in the Townsend
club hall one mile east of
Hermiston. They have not
only broken into the place,
but have broken win-
dows, torn down pictures,
and made fires with them
in the middle of the floor,
driven nails into the floor
and otherwise done dam-
age. The Townsend club is
offering a $50 reward for
the apprehension and con-
viction of any person con-
nected with the destruc-
tion of property.
The Portland-Pendle-
ton Motor Transport Co.
is now operating its own
delivery truck under its
own operating rights in
and about Hermiston. This
equipment and operating
rights take the place of the
equipment and operating
rights formerly owned and
operated by the late I.W.
Geer. The company has
announced that its trans-
fer and freight service will
be the same as in the past
with local hauling and
storage facilities. Robert
Geer, who has had several
years experience in the
transportation business,
will be retained here as an
agent for this district.

Some weeks ago the
Umatilla
correspondent
of this paper made men-
tion of workmen unearth-
ing a mammoth tusk, or
what appeared to be such,
at the O.W.R. & N. gravel
pit near that city. The
find was placed on exhi-
bition in the depot there,
and later it was sent to Dr.
W.T. Foster, president of
Reed College at Portland,
for geological and pale-
ontological investigation,
the belief having become
prevalent that the bone or
tusk was that of some pre-
historic animal. Unfortu-
nately, this specimen was
broken in shipment and Dr.
Foster, who made prelim-
inary study of the pieces,
said that a more detailed
study would be necessary
before venturing any sci-
entific estimate of the dis-
covery. He has asked that
the workmen, on finding
new evidence, leave it in
the ground and notify the
college, in which event Dr.
Torrey and other qualified
geologists would visit the
scene and gather whatever
data was available.
“The discovery holds
out interesting promise
for geological study,” said
Dr. Foster. “If they are the
bones of a prehistoric ani-
mal or any animal not now
accounted for, of course,
there is great scientific
value there. We shall try to
piece together the bones at

Among the Columbia
news notes in this paper
last week was chronicled
a great stir in that district
over a crazy man that later
proved to be sane, but on
Friday of the same week, a
sure enough demented per-
son visited the Hermiston
district. On the afternoon
of that day, an auto party
brought word that they
had passed a queer-act-
ing
and
exceedingly
unkempt-looking person-
age on their way to town
from the south. They said
he was ambling toward this
city. Chief of Police Ross
Laudenslager watched for
the man, and as he came
wandering in placed him
under arrest. Later the pris-
oner was taken before Jus-
tice of the Peace E.P. Dodd
who, after questioning
him thoroughly, deemed it
advisable to order his com-
mitment to the care of the
county sheriff. Answer-
ing the questions of Judge
Dodd, the fellow very
lucidly stated that he was
on his way from Pendle-
ton to Portland, but, while
no one suspected at that
he was looney, neverthe-
less he proved later to be
an escaped inmate of the
Eastern Oregon hospital
for the insane at Pendleton,
from which institution he
took his departure the day
before.
